Brief Description:
The GIS Project Manager is responsible for the leadership and management of project teams, ensuring the successful delivery of GIS projects that meet client expectations, timelines, and budgets. This role involves managing the project scope, technical requirements, schedule, and communication while maintaining quality and profitability. The GIS Project Manager applies advanced GIS knowledge, project management expertise, and leadership skills to oversee technical work efforts, mentor team members, and support business development initiatives.
The GIS Project Manager independently, reporting to the GIS Department Manager for guidance on strategic goals, policy matters, and critical project decisions. Operates with autonomy in managing project teams, resolving technical challenges, and maintaining client relationships.
Examples of work/duties:
- Actively manage project scope, schedule, and budget to deliver projects successfully and to client satisfaction.
- Serve as the primary client liaison, ensuring effective communication and addressing project requirements.
- Oversee technical work efforts, perform quality assurance, and mentor project team members to foster professional growth and ensure alignment with project objectives and quality standards.
- Supervises, coordinates, and reviews the technical work of a project team of GIS Technicians, GIS Analysts, and/or subconsultants.
- Estimates staffing needs and schedules and assigns work to meet completion date.
- Evaluate project needs and workflows to define technical requirements for GIS applications and geospatial data models.
- Perform technical tasks, including research, report preparation, and GIS design development.
- Develop project scopes, fee quotations, proposals, and contracts.
- Participate in business development and marketing activities to grow GIS services.
- Keep informed of new developments and requirements affecting GIS projects.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements (education, licensing, certifications, etc.):
- Bachelor’s degree in GIS, Geography, Computer Science, Civil Engineering, Environmental Science or related field
- Minimum 5 years of professional GIS experience, including advanced technical work and geospatial analysis
- At least 2 years of experience managing GIS projects, including scope development, budgeting, and client interaction
- Advanced proficiency in Esri software, including ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and ArcGIS Enterprise
- Hands-on experience with mobile GIS apps such as ArcGIS Field Maps, Survey123, and Dashboards for field data collection and visualization.
- Knowledge of geodatabase design, data management, and integration of geospatial data from various sources
- Familiarity with Python scripting, Arcade, or ModelBuilder for workflow automation and custom tool creation
- Experience with GNSS field data collection using high-accuracy equipment and post-processing techniques
- Understanding of GIS and mapping standards, including metadata documentation and quality assurance protocols.
- Strong analytical skills for interpreting spatial data and providing actionable insights to clients.
- Proficiency in project management tools and methodologies.
- Experience developing project scopes, schedules, and budgets, and monitoring performance metrics.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritizing tasks and resources effectively.
- Proven ability to identify and mitigate project risks and ensure adherence to contractual obligations.
- Strong communication skills for interacting with clients, stakeholders, and team members, including technical presentations and report writing.
- Familiarity with RFP/RFQ processes, including proposal preparation and contract negotiation.
- Possess a valid driver’s license and ability to travel to client sites as needed.
- Commitment to staying current with GIS trends, technologies, and best practices.
- Certifications:
o Geographic Information System Professional (GISP)
o Esri ArcGIS Pro Associate (or equivalent)
o Project Management Professional (PMP) (Preferred)
