The Role – Control Technician II
An Automation Controls Technician II is a mid-level position responsible for the installation, troubleshooting, maintenance, and optimization of complex automation systems in industrial settings. This role requires a deeper understanding of control systems, PLCs, sensors, and other automation components. The technician is expected to perform more advanced tasks such as programming, calibrating, and testing control systems, as well as diagnosing and resolving complex issues. They may also be involved in system upgrades and improvements, ensuring maximum efficiency and minimal downtime.
The Automation Controls Technician II often works independently or with minimal supervision, collaborating with engineers and other team members to enhance system performance and reliability. A solid foundation in electrical systems, control theory, and advanced troubleshooting skills is essential in this role, along with the ability to mentor or assist less experienced technicians.
What You'll Do
- Provide customer support by phone and onsite, resolving simple to complex issues with a variety of manufacturing equipment and automation systems.
- Assemble and build electrical control panels.
- Read and interpret electrical drawings and schematics.
- Write service reports and other related documents.
- Recommend parts for new installation or replacement purposes.
- Modify programmable logic controller (PLC) programs.
- Modify human-machine interface (HMI) programs.
- Lead medium-sized projects with minimal supervision.
- Must be able to respond to emergency service calls as directed during the day and after hours (on-call is a weekly shared/rotated responsibility).
- Travel is approximately 5 - 10% overnight travel throughout the year.
- Typical work hours are 8 hours between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Monday – Friday. However, work may be performed at any time on any day of the week to meet business needs.
- Ability to work overtime on occasions as customers’ needs may dictate.
What You Bring (Required Experience)
- Associate degree in Electro-Mechanical Technology, Automated Manufacturing, or equivalent degree/experience.
- 3-7 years’ experience programming, installing, configuring the following:
- Rockwell Automation CompactLogix/ControlLogix PLCs.
- Rockwell Automation FactoryTalk ME/SE HMIs.
- Rockwell Automation Powerflex variable frequency drives (VFDs)
- Experience troubleshooting mechanical and electrical machine issues.
- Experience using Microsoft Excel including using functions.
- Experience using Microsoft Word creating instruction manuals.
Bonus Points For (Preferred Experience)
- Solid understanding and knowledge of industry standards, specifically NFPA 79, NEC, and UL508A.
- Experience with Rockwell Automation SLC500 PLCs.
- Experience with servos.
- Experience with DC Drives.
- Experience with Siemens and other brands of PLCs.
- Experience configuring and programming SCADA systems such as Ignition, Wonderware, FactoryTalk SE.
- Understanding of pneumatics and hydraulics.
