Position Description

The College has one MMIII HVAC/Plumbing (Grade 17) position on the Michael J. Grant Campus.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class is a skilled mechanic in one of the major craft or specialty areas such as HVAC/Plumbing. The incumbent is expected to exercise considerable independent judgment in determining materials and methods to be used in performing assignments. Perform regular and specialized mechanical repairs of building equipment and systems. The employee may perform sub-craftsman level duties while supervising the work of subordinate Maintenance Mechanics level I and II or assist Maintenance Mechanic of a higher level. The incumbent is expected to exercise considerable independent judgment in determining materials and methods to be used in performing assignments. Work assignments are received in the form of oral or written instructions, sketches or blueprints. The employee may supervise a small number of Laborers or subordinate Maintenance Mechanics who assist in performing assigned work. Supervision is received from assigned supervisory personnel, who inspect work in progress and upon completion for compliance with specifications and standards. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

  • Checking and logging status of all critical equipment in buildings on site
  • HVAC maintains and repairs mechanical equipment, compressors, pumps, heat exchangers including the repair replacement of motors, fans, belts, couplings, filters and other component parts; adjusts for motor alignment, air flow and temperature/pressure controls, boilers and hot water heaters, condensers, compressors, cooling towers, motor controls and ducts.
  • Plumbing repairs and restoration including sinks, toilets, traps, ejector pumps, drains, unclogs sinks, toilets, sewer lines and similar apparatus.
  • Proficient with systems in copper & PVC using pro-press and hot work methods
  • Assists a maintenance mechanic of a higher classification in the servicing and repair of machinery and equipment, such as electric motors, pumps, meters, compressors, cleans, oils and greases machinery;
  • Able to perform work of other skilled crafts - Carpentry, Electricity, Painting Welding, etc.

Full Performance Knowledges, Skills, Abilities And Personal Characteristics

Thorough knowledge of the practices, materials, tools and methods of the assigned craft or specialty area; thorough knowledge of the pertinent rules, regulations and codes which are applicable to the assigned craft or specialty area; thorough knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the work; skill in the use and care of tools, materials and equipment of the trade; ability to understand and work from general instructions, building specifications, blueprints or sketches; ability to make time, labor and material estimates; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to supervise the work of others in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

Minimum Qualifications

Either

  • Completion of two (2) years of vocational education courses in a vocational school program or in an apprentice or training program in one of the craft areas, and two (2) years of experience in the craft or specialty to which the incumbent will be assigned; or,
  • Four (4) years of experience in the craft or specialty to which the incumbent will be assigned; or,
  • An equivalent combination of the above education, or training, and experience as defined by the limits of (a) and (b); or,
  • One (1) year of experience as a Maintenance Mechanic II.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Depending on the nature of the assignment, at the time of appointment and during employment in this title, candidates may be required to possess a valid New York State driver's license appropriate for the vehicle to be operated.

HIRING SALARY

The shift will be 7:30AM- 4:00PM, Monday through Friday. Shift/Days and Hours are subject to change.
