Prison Librarian, Evening Shift
Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department, House of Correction
Under the direct supervision of the Education Director, the evening librarian assists in the administration and operation of the library at the Suffolk County House of Correction in Boston. The librarians provide inmates with access to library services and legal services in compliance with state and professional standards and constitutional requirements, support the institution’s educational and rehabilitative programming, and share the Sheriff’s Department’s commitment to maintaining the safe and secure custody and control of inmates.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervise the operation of the institution library during the evening shift
Provide reference service and respond to information requests
Maintain and develop a general library collection for use by inmates
Maintain and update an adequate law library to ensure inmate access to legal materials including statutes, case law, legal reference material, and confidential discovery records
Deliver library materials to special population units without direct access to the library
Assist in formulating schedules and procedures to assure all inmates have access to library services
Provide inmates access to computers and internet content as permitted by institution policy
Assist in procuring library materials through new purchases and donations
Train and supervise inmate library workers
Prepare reports and maintain statistics
Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending training and participating in professional activities
Work professionally with institutional custody and non-custody staff to support the Sheriff’s Department’s programming efforts and maintain a safe and secure environment
