Accounting Technician I
Salary Range : $53,539 - $68,661
GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK
Performs intermediate technical work administering the fringe benefit programs of the school division; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision.
This is secretary work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operation of machines, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is not subject to adverse environmental conditions.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / TYPICAL TASKS

- Explaining and enrolling employees in insurance programs; preparing and maintaining benefit records; assisting with general accounting and record keeping.
- Maintains employee insurance records and files including coverages, policy and procedures, payroll deductions, employee assistance, insurance billing, verification, and payment of premiums;
- Explains and verifies insurance programs and enrolls employees in various programs;
- Oversees the administration of COBRA and retiree insurance programs;
- Receives fees for insurance payments, credit refunds, grant reimbursements, use of facility deposits / payments, food service, etc.;
- Generates miscellaneous billings, including use of facility deposits; ensures timely receipt of accounts receivable; produces reminder notices in cases of nonpayment;
- Assists with preparation of the budget documents;
- Types correspondence, files financial documents; answers incoming telephone calls;
- Assists with preparation of year-end documents;
- Assists with payroll; distributes reports; matches checks with lists and locates discrepancies; keys in new employee data;
- Maintains computer records on employee contracts and other personnel data;
- Receives, sorts, distributes and collects mail;
- Operates word processor, computer and other office equipment;
- Prepares related reports; performs basic clerical duties;
- Receives, reviews, processes and files general liability claims;
- Performs related tasks as required.

Thorough knowledge of the insurance and benefits programs, methods and record keeping; general knowledge of the basic methods, practices and objectives of public finance administration; skill in the use of computer equipment; ability to communicate effectively orally or in writing; ability to operate a computer and other office equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, insurance representatives and the general public; ability to maintain technical records.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited community college with major course work in administrative support technology or related field and considerable insurance experience.
