The Suffolk University Veteran's Upward Bound program is funded by the U.S. Department of Education and has been created to provide veterans with educational support, advising, and an individualized education plan. Veterans take courses in mathematics, laboratory science, composition and literature, and foreign language. Veterans may participate in study skills, tutoring, academic and personal counseling, financial aid planning, college application seminars, and cultural events as well. This position reports to the Vice President of Diversity, Access, and Inclusion. In conjunction with the program’s Outreach Specialist, the Associate Director is responsible for performing administrative duties related to program planning, budgeting, program review, and assessment, implementation of federal guidelines, implementing plans to achieve program objectives, and related management of records and student information systems. Responsibilities also include preparing and submitting reports to the Department of Education and the University as required and making recommendations for applications and assisting in developing and submitting applications that best suit the University’s mission as well as recruiting and advising participants.
PRIMARY / PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES :
- ADMINISTRATIVE SERVICES : Lead the development and implementation of services to veterans, supervise two full-time staff members, and oversee the day-to-day operations of the program to ensure that all participants receive effective and adequate support. Responsible for overseeing the project’s academic and enrichment programming that includes academic services, career development services, and advising students through their transition from military service to college.
- RECRUITMENT : Assist with the development of recruitment plans and with establishing program policies which include recruiting, attending veterans’ related events, and bringing awareness; hire, train, supervise, and evaluate program personnel, including program faculty and other consultants.
- PROGRAM OUTREACH : Serve as program representative; oversee the selection of eligible program participants; ensure the adequacy of participant experiences; provide teaching services as needed, and facilitate workshops / seminars.
- PROGRAM OPERATIONS : Develop working relationships with key offices at the University (Admissions, Registrar’s, Financial Aid offices) and at other institutions of higher education in order to advocate for participants. Coordinate services for program participants. Participate in veteran services networks and strengthen relationships with area service providers to support participant referrals to the program and to ensure various needs of the veteran participants are met.
- Ensure effectiveness of the program by ensuring that program goals and objectives are met. This includes data management and reporting (internal and external) – i.e., the Annual Performance Report that gets submitted on an annual basis to the Department of Education.
- Responsible for budget management and grant reporting. Must comply with local and federal budgetary guidelines.
- Other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS / QUALIFICATIONS :
This position is grant funded. Employment beyond the cycle of the grant is contingent upon successful grant funding.
