Position Overview:
Sugar Creek Charter School’s mission is to eradicate generational poverty by providing a rigorous, college and career preparatory education for students from kindergarten through 12th grade. We focus on academic preparation, college and career readiness, and life skills for success.
We are seeking a dedicated and mission-aligned EC High School Self-Contained Teacher to join our team. This role is designed to support students with moderate to severe disabilities who require intensive, individualized instruction in a self-contained classroom setting. The ideal candidate will be passionate about student advocacy, differentiated instruction, and functional life skill development, ensuring students receive the academic, social, and behavioral support they need to succeed.
Key Responsibilities:
Instruction & Student Support:
- Provide individualized and small-group instruction in core academic areas, functional skills, social-emotional learning, and vocational skills.
- Implement evidence-based teaching strategies to support students with diverse learning needs, including those with intellectual disabilities, autism, emotional/behavioral disorders, and multiple disabilities.
- Utilize alternative curricula, assistive technology, and hands-on learning experiences to foster independence.
- Teach and reinforce life skills, self-regulation strategies, and transition planning to prepare students for post-secondary opportunities.
- Implement behavior intervention plans (BIPs) and positive behavior supports (PBIS) to create a structured, nurturing learning environment.
IEP Compliance & Case Management:
- Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in compliance with IDEA and state regulations.
- Maintain accurate records of student progress, service logs, and compliance documents.
- Lead and participate in IEP meetings, parent conferences, and interdisciplinary team discussions.
- Collaborate with therapists (occupational, speech, physical), behavioral specialists, and support staff to provide wraparound services for students.
Collaboration & Professionalism:
- Work closely with general education teachers and support staff to ensure smooth transitions for students participating in inclusion opportunities.
- Engage in regular professional development to stay informed about best practices in special education, transition planning, and behavior management.
- Actively participate in MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports) to identify appropriate interventions for students.
- Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress, challenges, and strategies for support at home.
Classroom & Behavior Management:
- Establish and maintain a structured, predictable classroom environment that meets students’ unique needs.
- Use visual schedules, adaptive communication strategies, and structured routines to support student independence.
- Utilize de-escalation techniques, behavior reinforcement strategies, and crisis intervention methods as needed.
- Teach students self-regulation, communication, and social interaction skills to enhance their ability to engage with others.
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Special Education or a related field.
- Certification: Valid North Carolina teaching license with an Exceptional Children’s Adaptive Curriculum endorsement.
- Experience:
- Prior experience teaching students with moderate to severe disabilities in a self-contained setting.
- Strong knowledge of IEP development, adaptive curriculum, assistive technology, and behavioral interventions.
- Skills & Attributes:
- Ability to implement individualized and structured instructional methods.
- Experience with augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices preferred.
