QUALIFICATIONS
Education
- Graduate of an approved school of nursing
Experience/Skills
- 1-2 years professional OB/GYN experience

Possesses, or is willing to acquire, the special knowledge needed to safely care for patients and/or newborns in the OB/GYN unit including
- labor and delivery
- post-partum
- nursery
- clean GYN patients
- Must complete annual EMTALA education and annual MSE education
- Ability to establish effective working relationships with physicians and other professional staff
Required Licenses/Certifications
- Currently licensed as an RN by the Indiana State Board of Nursing
- CPR
- ACLS (within one year)
- NRP (within one year)
- FHM (within one year)

Patient Care
- Demonstrates the ability to assess, treat, and/or care for the obstetrical patient and the neonate
- Possesses knowledge of growth and development of the obstetrical patient and the neonate
- Understands the range of treatment needed by the obstetrical patient and the neonate
- Understands and complies with IC policies and procedures at all times
- Follows course of patient’s labor, recognizes deviations from normal, and takes appropriate action
- Recognizes signs of fetal distress during labor and alerts physician when necessary
- Assists physician in resuscitation of the newborn
- Does examination in absence of the physician recognizing station dilation and effacement of the cervix
- Notifies physician of progress, so he/she is in attendance at the delivery
- Explains procedures to patient and family
- Records delivery in appropriate log
- Understands and exercises proper technique in caring for the newborn
- Administers proper dosages and applies acceptable techniques when giving medication to the newborn
- Assesses mother’s knowledge of care and feeding of the newborn and initiates appropriate instruction
- Ensures that all required testing is performed on all infants before discharge or that arrangements have been made to have the test completed
- Obtains complete information from mother or family member for birth registration of newborn

Gives instruction to post-partum patient in caring for her physical needs during hospitalization and after discharge

Documentation
- Responsible for accurately initiating and completing all forms pertaining to patient care
- Maintains patient record
- Accurately and legibly transcribes physician orders and inputs to order entry
- Completes all documentation legibly and follows hospital policy for signatures, dates, and timing of events
Unit Responsibilities/Leadership/Miscellaneous
- Properly delegates necessary activities to other members of the healthcare team as their abilities or level of education dictates
- Participates in orientation of new staff
- Refers appropriate problems to House Supervisor, Director/Asst. Director of Patient Care Services and contributes to the resolution
- Supports hospital and nursing policies and decisions
- Promotes harmonious working relationship within unit and with peers
- Uses equipment and supplies in a safe, efficient manner
- Cleans and returns equipment to proper storage

Works in other areas of nursing services including Med/Surg, ICU and ER as needed and as qualified, performing duties including – but not limited to
- hourly patient rounding

- glucometer checks
- baths
- IV starts

- Coordinates/assists in maintaining unit and patient room tidiness
- Notifies other agencies and disciplines as necessary to facilitate coordinated patient care
- Participates in QI/PR activities and committees as assigned
- Stays current with advances in nursing
- Supports department by demonstrating flexibility with schedule and job duties
