What are the responsibilities and job description for the Sullivan SHINE Classroom Nurse LPN position at SULLIVAN MIDDLE?
The Sullivan SHINE program (Students with Health Impairments and Needs of Exception) is a specialized program for students who present with complex medical and developmental disabilities and have educational needs that require a high degree of program coordination and service. The program intends to enhance fine and gross motor skills development, encourage students to communicate at their level, and offer inclusion opportunities for socializing with peers. The program activities are designed to access a wide variety of sensory responses through auditory, visual, tactile, proprioceptive, vestibular, and olfactory stimulation.
Students in the SHINE program may require specific nursing and medical support due to health issues including, but not limited to, G/J tubes, vision concerns, inability to ambulate independently, loss of speech abilities, brain damage, respiratory issues, seizure disorders, and other health-related concerns. Students in the SHINE program require a 1:1 staff-to-student ratio with one lead teacher, paraprofessional(s), and classroom nurse to provide moderate to maximum assistance for personal care, feeding, academic work, augmentative communication, assistive technology, and assistance during inclusion opportunities. Related Service Staff conduct therapies within & outside of the classroom setting.

Title: SHINE Classroom Nurse
The SHINE Classroom Nurse position is located at Sullivan School. The SHINE nurse
- Works under the general supervision of the Superintendent/Receiver, Chief of Pupil Services, Director of Health, Wellness, and Nursing, and works collaboratively and cooperatively with the Sullivan School Nurses.
- Provides nursing treatments, and/or medication administration, ongoing assessments, and/or procedures for SHINE program students. The students' Individualized Health Care Plans, Sections 504 Plans, and/or Individualized Educational Plans will partly define roles and responsibilities.
- Works cooperatively with the administrator of the school building where the SHINE program is housed, as well as the SHINE classroom teacher and classroom paraprofessionals.
- Collaborates with families and the School Nurse to implement the treatment plans as appropriate.
- Collaborates with school personnel to support and maintain a healthy school environment.
- Demonstrates knowledge of and the ability to administer medications and treatments as ordered and in keeping with school policy on medication administration and special procedures in school.
- Cares for ill or injured children.
- Maintains up-to-date and accurate records of medications/ treatments/procedures as administered to student(s) and documents health-related activities and treatments electronically.
- Maintains medical equipment and supplies to ensure proper functioning, storage, and availability for the intended use.
- Uses community resources for referral of students with unmet health needs, including the need for a primary care provider.
- Frequent contact and communication with the school nurse, school personnel, students, families, caregivers, and other agencies.
- Enjoys variety and flexibility in their duties.
- Performs related duties as needed and other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Licensed Practical Nurse
A minimum of 1-3 years of experience in pediatrics, community health, or related field preferred
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Excellent teamwork skills
REQUIRED LICENSE(S) OR CERTIFICATIONS:
Current licensure to practice nursing in Massachusetts (LPN)
Current CPR/AED Certification
Salary Code FULL TIME (10 MONTH)
