The Valent BioSciences manufacturing site located on an expansive 73-acre site in Osage, IA is a state of the art 130,000 square foot plant and is the largest purpose-built biorational facility in the world. It serves as the manufacturing and quality control center for Valent BioSciences broad portfolio of fermentation products.
Description of Job:
As the Entomology Rearing Specialist- Weekends at Valent BioSciences, you will manage all aspects of the insectary and colony maintenance, providing high quality insects for product testing. You will also schedule the insects for testing purposes while maintaining and ensuring the availability of materials needed for testing. You must have the ability to adhere to testing schedules and workday timelines in order to accomplish a high volume of critical work, without compromising the integrity of the results and while meeting the scheduling needs of manufacturing. You will act as a technical expert within the Entomology department, with extensive knowledge related to laboratory insect colony rearing in conjunction with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and good documentation practices.
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintain insect colonies and prepare insect diets for product testing.
- Perform bioassay testing on raw materials, in-process, and finished goods.
- Troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation and perform simple repairs as needed.
- Complete test records, data entry, and analyze results using probit analysis with statistical software.
- Adhere to Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and maintain compliance with relevant regulations.
- Clean, calibrate, and maintain lab equipment while implementing preventative maintenance programs.
- Identify and develop process improvements and ergonomic solutions for the laboratory.
- Support laboratory investigations, deviations, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Maintain inventories and manage vendor interactions for the insectary.
- Comply with the QMS in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025 standard.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Relevant experience will be considered in lieu of degree.
- Bachelor’s degree (BA/BS) or equivalent experience preferred.
- Experience with GLP, aseptic techniques, and insect rearing is highly desired.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and data management tools.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to understand and write scientific procedures.
- Knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) is a plus.
- Ability to analyze statistical data and generate reports effectively.
- Flexibility to work variable shifts, weekends, and overtime as needed.
