What are the responsibilities and job description for the Fiber Network Design Engineer position at Sumitomo Electric U.S.A., Inc.?
- Design and Implementation: Develop fiber network architectures for hyperscale data centers, ensuring scalability, low latency, and optimal performance.
- Product Collaboration: Work closely with product development teams to align fiber optic cable design with specific data center requirements, including loss budgets, connectorization, and installation standards.
- Technical Support: Provide technical expertise to customers, guiding them on best practices for fiber installation, testing, and maintenance.
- Innovation: Collaborate with R&D teams to enhance cable performance and introduce new solutions tailored to hyperscale data center needs.
- Project Management: Lead and support fiber deployment projects from conception to completion, ensuring timely delivery and compliance with technical specifications.
- Quality Assurance: Oversee fiber testing processes, including OTDR, IL/RL testing, and compliance with industry standards like TIA/EIA and IEEE.
- Training: Conduct training sessions for customers and internal teams on fiber network design, testing, and troubleshooting.
- Other: Contribute to the business division as needed through collaboration and contribution to projects related to fiber networking such as present at Sumitomo, customer and public events.
- Deep understanding of fiber optic cabling, connectorization, and network components.
- Proficiency in network design tools and software (e.g., AutoCAD, Visio, or equivalent).
- Strong knowledge of industry standards, including ITU-T, IEEE, and TIA/EIA.
- Hands-on experience with fiber testing equipment (OTDR, power meters, etc.).
- Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working at or with hyperscale data center companies
- Familiarity with high-density fiber management systems and splicing techniques.
- Certifications such as CFOT, RCDD, or equivalent.
- Work is performed in an office environment and requires the physical and motor skills typical of an office environment, including, but not limited to: prolonged sitting, working on a computer, using telephones, handheld technology and other office equipment, standing, walking and stooping.
- May be occasionally required to lift objects such as files, boxes of paper, office supplies, and computer / office equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to routinely concentrate, focus and read for general understanding and analytical purposes and ability to communicate effectively.
