About the Role
Teaching Assistants are responsible for supporting the Course Instructor for Summer Discovery Emergency Medicine, Engineering & Robotics or Psychiatry summer enrichment courses at University of California, Berkeley. This is a full-day, two-week academy project-based research intensive for academically motivated high school students interested in the field of medicine and health sciences.
A fully developed course curriculum will be provided by Summer Discovery Academics, Instructors and Teaching Assistants will receive training to ensure quality delivery of an experiential and engaging project-based course.
This interactive approach to learning encourages teamwork, teaches leadership, and targets skill development that students can apply to a future career in any engineering or health profession and beyond into their personal lives. The course will provide students with insight into the various paths required for undergrad, graduate, and postgraduate coursework necessary in their field of interest. Features may include visits to simulation labs, healthcare settings, and panelists in various stages of healthcare careers. By the end of two weeks, students will have developed their research project proposal and will submit it for review on the final in-person day.

Duties & Responsibilities
- Supports Instructor with classroom facilitation in small groups, individualized student needs, activity set-up, capstone project student support, classroom management, supervision on academic field trips, and supports a safe experience.
- Acts as liaison for guest speakers on various program days.
- Serves as a positive role model for the students and staff in the program. Use good judgment in decision making, problem-solving, and mentoring young adults.
- Seeks guidance and assistance from Instructor and Academic Dean/Coordinator regarding student related concerns and follows through on communication as needed.
- Coordinates with Summer Discovery Residential staff to appropriately respond to emergencies and assists in the needs of the program as directed.
- Adheres to policies and procedures as outlined in applicable manuals and employee handbooks.
- Complete all Pre-Program responsibilities (up to 10 hours):
- Review with Instructor provided course curriculum and supply list to identify academic course questions and supplemental supply coordination needs.
- Attend synchronous and asynchronous trainings and virtual orientations.
- Attend and participate in pre-program on-campus staff orientation training.
- Create Canvas account prior to virtual training.
- Complete all Post-Program responsibilities:
- Ensure completion of Student Performance Evaluations.
- Available to answer questions from Academic Dean/Coordinator or Summer Discovery regarding student course, behavioral, or evaluation experiences.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Education/Experience/Qualifications
- Bachelor’s, Master’s, or terminal degree (or current student thereof) at an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization.
- Classroom teaching experience at high school or undergraduate level preferred.
- Experience in supporting classroom instruction, skill with project-based learning is preferred.
- Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities, using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to thrive in an organization that values the diversity of its student body and workforce and actively promotes equity and inclusion.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively to complete tasks.
- Available to commute to campus daily for full program duration.
- Must be at least 21 years of age and be eligible to work in the US.
- Housing is not provided, and candidate must be able to commute daily to their location. Transportation cost is covered by employee.
Expected hours of work / Travel
- This role is required to be at the assigned campus during assigned course periods, 9-5pm (1 hour break).
- Attend required pre-program virtual training and in-person campus Orientation (1 day) responsibilities related to course planning.
- This role is expected to commute to and from program location daily.
