About the role
This role involves the installation and removal of piers, boat lifts, and accessories from both shore and water, utilizing hand tools and machinery. This work is critical for the construction, maintenance, and repair of marine structures, requiring labor-intensive tasks while prioritizing safety in diverse weather conditions and challenging environments. Additionally, the Deckhand Captain is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of tugboats (up to 100 tons) and maneuvering a variety of barges (20x30 feet to 40x80 feet). The captain ensures compliance with USCG regulations, navigational standards, and safety protocols.
What you'll do
- Assist in the construction, maintenance, and dismantling of docks, piers, and other marine structures.
- Load, unload, and distribute materials and equipment.
- Operate and maintain hand and power tools.
- Perform routine checks and maintenance on boats and barges.
- Safely operate tugboats, pushing barges in various conditions.
- Ensure safe barge transport by knowing local waterways.
- Coordinate tugboat movements with the senior foreman.
- Adhere to USCG regulations and safety procedures.
- Keep logs of operations and maintenance.
- Lead during emergencies and ensure crew safety.
- Follow safety protocols, including using safety gear.
- Set up and remove scaffolding and temporary structures.
- Clean sites and remove debris.
- Work with the team to complete projects.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- USCG Captain License (Required)
- Towing endorsement (Preferred)
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Previous experience in a marine or construction environment is highly advantageous.
- Ability to swim and comfort working on or near water.
- Familiarity with hand tools, basic carpentry and machinery.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
- Certification in CPR and first aid is a plus.
