Position Summary:
The Special Education Paraeducator assists and supports students with disabilities in academic, social, and behavioral areas. Working under the direct supervision of a special education teacher, the paraeducator will provide one-on-one or small group support to students, implement individualized education plans (IEPs), and assist in creating an inclusive learning environment. The role requires compassion, patience, flexibility, and a strong commitment to enhancing the educational experience for students with diverse needs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Support Individualized Education Plans (IEPs): Assist in implementing IEPs, accommodations, and modifications for students with disabilities, ensuring the goals are being met as outlined in the student’s IEP.
- Student Assistance: Provide one-on-one and small group instruction to students with disabilities in various academic subjects, reinforcing concepts taught by the classroom teacher.
- Behavioral Support: Assist students with emotional and behavioral challenges by implementing behavior management techniques, monitoring behavior, and offering support in maintaining a positive and productive learning environment.
- Classroom Management: Support classroom teachers in managing a diverse and inclusive classroom, providing additional supervision, and ensuring students stay on task.
- Assist with Physical Needs: Assist students with mobility, personal care, and health needs as required by the students' individual care plans, including feeding, toileting, or positioning.
- Communication Support: Help students in expressing their needs and interacting with peers, facilitating communication through various methods (e.g., verbal, sign language, assistive technology).
- Collaboration with Staff: Work closely with special education teachers, general education teachers, and other staff to ensure a coordinated approach to student learning and behavioral management.
- Documentation and Reporting: Assist in maintaining records of student progress, behavior, and interactions, and provide feedback to the supervising teacher regarding student needs, progress, and any concerns.
- Supervision during Transitions: Assist with students during transitions between classes, lunch, recess, and other activities, ensuring they navigate the school environment safely and appropriately.
- Assist in Extracurricular Activities: Support students during extracurricular activities or field trips, ensuring their participation and safety.
- Training and Professional Development: Participate in required training, workshops, and professional development opportunities to stay current with special education practices and requirements.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent (required).
- Associate’s degree, paraeducator certification, or completion of two years of college coursework (preferred).
- Previous experience working with children with special needs, especially in a school setting (preferred).
- Knowledge of special education laws, IEPs, and accommodations (preferred).
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team and follow directions from teachers and administrators.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Patience, empathy, and a commitment to student success.
- Physical stamina and the ability to assist with students' physical needs as necessary.
Working Conditions:
- Environment: School setting, typically in classrooms or learning spaces. Occasional outdoor activities or field trips may be required.
