The Vice President of Patient Safety and Quality Outcomes will lead the development and implementation of patient safety and quality improvement strategies across the Acute service line. Operating within a new matrix organization, this role will collaborate closely with operational leadership to ensure a seamless integration of quality initiatives into daily practices. The VP is accountable for ensuring all findings from corrective actions are implemented at the facilities and embedding these into routine procedures to drive sustainable improvements in patient outcomes.

Roles and Responsibilities :

  • Design and execute a comprehensive patient safety and quality improvement strategy tailored to the Acute service line.
  • Collaborate with the SVP of Quality and Patient Safety, Chief Medical Officer, Chief Operations Officer, and other leaders to align quality initiatives with organizational priorities.
  • Establish a culture of safety through proactive risk identification and mitigation.
  • Analyze patient safety events and implement targeted interventions to improve care processes.
  • Develop and promote best practices to reduce patient harm and enhance clinical outcomes.
  • Work cross-functionally with clinical leaders, medical staff, risk management, compliance, and frontline teams to advance patient safety and quality initiatives.
  • Monitor day-to-day compliance activities.
  • Develop, review, update internal clinical procedures, outcomes measurement, patient satisfaction, clinical / financial tools and resources.
  • Function as a channel of communication to receive and direct quality and patient safety issues and oversee investigations and resolution of these issues.
  • Initiate and lead communications with regulatory agencies as appropriate.
  • Lead performance improvement initiatives by leveraging data analytics to track and trend key performance indicators (KPIs) such as treatment retention, successful discharges, and patient engagement.
  • Implement evidence-based care models to optimize clinical and operational outcomes.
  • Facilitate cross-functional collaboration to drive continuous quality improvement.
  • Work closely with the COO and other regional and facility-level operational leaders to integrate quality improvement strategies into daily workflows.
  • Ensure all corrective action findings are addressed, with solutions built into routine procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and accreditation standards related to patient safety and quality for the Acute service line, including The Joint Commission, CARF, CMS, and state licensure requirements.
  • Develop / maintain proficiency in regulatory planning strategy and the submission of regulatory plans.
  • Assist facility quality leaders in the development of corrective action plans for the resolution of problematic issues or to address areas of compliance vulnerability.
  • Address all findings from corrective actions and embed these into routine procedures to drive sustainable improvements.
  • Assist facility quality leaders in conduct of root cause analysis (RCA), risk assessments, and corrective action plan implementation, ensuring sustainable improvements.
  • Serve as a resource and partner for division operational teams in achieving quality goals.
  • Develop / maintain proficiency in regulatory requirements, including reporting and response to regulatory bodies.
  • Establish and refine systems for timely and effective reporting, investigation, and response to patient safety incidents, ensuring lessons learned are embedded in operations.
  • Work cross-functionally with clinical leaders, medical staff, risk management, compliance, and frontline teams to advance patient safety and quality initiatives.
  • Ensure proper facility reporting of violations or potential violations to duly authorized enforcement agencies as appropriate and / or required.
  • Oversee training programs to enhance staff competencies in patient safety, quality improvement, and Acute-specific care protocols.
  • Foster a culture of learning and professional growth through mentorship and skill development opportunities.
  • Oversee the performance and development of direct team members, providing guidance and support to ensure high standards of patient safety and quality are maintained.
  • Utilize data-driven insights to evaluate performance and inform decision-making.
  • Prepare and present quality performance reports to senior leadership and other stakeholders, highlighting progress, trends, and areas for improvement.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Education / Experience / Skill Requirements :

  • Master's degree in Healthcare Administration, Nursing, Public Health, or a related field required.
  • Eight or more years of experience in behavioral health, with at least 5 years in a leadership role focused on quality and safety required.
  • Five or more years' supervisory / management experience required, preferably in behavioral health.
  • Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ) or equivalent certification preferred.
  • Experience with Lean Six Sigma or other quality improvement frameworks preferred.
  • Deep understanding of Acute treatment models and quality improvement methodologies.
  • Deep understanding of regulatory and accreditation standards, including The Joint Commission, CARF, CMS, NCQA, and state regulations.
  • Proven track record of successfully implementing quality improvement initiatives in a multi-site or matrixed healthcare environment.
  • Demonstrated success in leading cross-functional teams in a matrixed environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead change management and foster a culture of safety and accountability.
  • Exceptional communication, facilitation, collaboration, and influencing skills with diverse stakeholders.
  • Exercises sound judgment in responding to inquiries; understands when to route inquiries to next level.
  • Self-motivated with strong organizational skills and superior attention to detail.
  • Must be able to manage multiple tasks / projects simultaneously within inflexible time frames. Ability to adapt to frequent priority changes.
  • Capable of working within established policies, procedures and practices prescribed by the organization.
  • Willingness and ability to travel extensively across the organization's multi-state footprint.
