This role is essential in proactively communicating and engaging with the public about Summit County services, County Council initiatives, programs, events, and active emergencies. The Communications Specialist I serves as the lead for implementing strategic communication initiatives and acts as the Public Information Officer (PIO) for assigned departments. Additionally, this role supports the Joint Information Center when activated. Works under the supervision of the Communication and Public Engagement Director.

SALARY RANGE $25.89- $36.26/hourly
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Journalism, Communications, Marketing, or related field; AND
- At least three (3) years of experience in public relations, marketing, advertising, graphic design or public engagement and outreach; OR
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Responsible for developing and executing strategic, specialized communication and outreach plans, creating and sharing general communications and social media content in audio, video and picture format across multiple platforms and channels. Drafts and edits press releases, media advisories, website content, newsletters and fliers. Makes and coordinates media pitches; develops and executes public awareness and engagement campaigns on a variety of issues and topics; hosts and/or coordinates events with county residents, staff, and elected officials.
- Works as a department liaison and communication manager to strategize with elected officials and department directors to coordinate seamless and effective public information dissemination, media relations, response communications, and engagement efforts. Writes news releases and articles, participates in radio and television interviews and promotions; schedules and coordinates special projects and events. Interfaces with members of the public at outreach events and online to message programs and services; develops website content for various departments. Provides backup PIO support as instructed by the Communications and Public Engagement Department Director.
