The Paralegal III will perform complex paralegal duties to support the legal services provided by the County Attorney’s Office. This role involves managing case preparation, handling case files, and providing paralegal expertise in both the Civil and Criminal Divisions. Paralegal III works under the general supervision of the County Attorney and division leaders and may provide guidance or supervision to Legal Secretaries and Paralegal(s) I or II. SALARY $35.54 - $49.76/hourly

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • An associate degree in Paralegal or Legal Assistant Studies or related field from an accredited college or university; bachelor's degree preferred; AND
  • Ten (10) years of experience as a Paralegal; AND
  • Shall possess a current certification from the National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA), the National Federation of Paralegal Associations (NFPA), or the American Alliance of Paralegals, Inc. (AAPI) or a Certificate in Paralegal Studies or Equivalent (i.e. successful completion of program – ABA approved OR accredited institution – consisting of 60 semester hours (or equivalent quarter hours) with 15 hours of substantive legal courses.) OR
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be keyboard proficient.
  • Must obtain and maintain a Notary Public seal.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Performs legal research and clerical case management for criminal and civil litigation; drafts litigation and criminal pleadings; manages document production and discovery, including drafting and responding to interrogatories, requests for production and other discovery; manages the case management and legal research software; assists with trial preparation, specifically, jury research, voir dire, documents, evidence and exhibits and attends hearings and trials as needed; and assists in establishing work priorities and distributes workload of the office; follows up on assigned projects and assures work quality consistent with management requirements and expectations.
  • Locates witnesses using specialized internet and computer software resources.
  • Monitors general fiscal activity of the office; assures compliance with established constraints by tracking expenditures and account balances; reviews and processes invoices for accounts payable and assures timely payment of the same.
  • Gathers and analyzes data and produces reports relating to office functions and procedures, and to crime statistics; analyzes evidence and detects discrepancies, trends, and aberrations in data and evidence.
  • Performs general clerical and secretarial duties for the County Attorney and Deputy County Attorneys i.e. typing, word processing, filing, dictation, scheduling appointments, answering telephone, copying, etc. and coordinates with other departments and personnel regarding work with their departments.
  • Composes and prepares correspondence for the review and signature of the County Attorney and Deputy County Attorney(s); composes and prepares a variety of legal documents and pleadings such as motions, orders, briefs, warrants, complaints, commitments, contracts, ordinances, resolutions, and subpoenas for trial witnesses, petitions for subpoena power, criminal investigative subpoena power, incompetence hearings, forfeiture pleadings, etc.; prepares instructions for jury trials.
  • Coordinates and works with law enforcement agencies and courts in regards to filing criminal information and civil complaints and petitions; monitors civil and criminal court calendar and advises County Attorney and Deputy County Attorney(s) of court dates and prepares civil and criminal files as needed.
  • Opens, maintains, organizes and monitors active civil files; communicates with courts regarding trial and hearing dates, etc., petitions and prepares correspondence and pleadings within files.
  • Performs duties related to interviewing clients seeking protective orders; prepares appropriate documentation and follows established procedures for processing the same in the absence of the Victim Advocate.
  • Works with other attorney(s) in resolving practical problems with civil and criminal cases, i.e. court dates, appointments, response to pleadings, messages, etc.
  • Controls the maintenance of all administrative, retrieval, civil and criminal files; maintains department library materials.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
