Summit Design and Engineering Services is seeking a Senior Structural Engineer to join our team. As Senior Structural Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the department's direction, mentoring junior staff, and maintaining trusted client relationships-all within a collaborative environment.
Responsibilities:
- Lead structural engineering projects from concept to completion, including full design of systems using steel, concrete, masonry, and timber.
- Prepare and oversee calculations, models, specifications, and construction documents throughout all phases of design and construction.
- Conduct field visits and site inspections to monitor construction progress and ensure design integrity, code compliance, and safety standards.
- Collaborate with internal disciplines-including architectural and civil, to develop coordinated, buildable solutions.
- Participate in business development efforts, including proposal writing, fee estimates, and client presentations.
- Serve as the main point of contact for structural clients, cultivating long-term relationships and repeat business.
- Manage departmental resources, project schedules, and budgets to ensure timely and quality delivery.
- Recruit, mentor, and develop structural engineering staff to support firm growth and uphold design excellence.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil Engineering (structural emphasis) from an ABET-accredited program.
- 15-25 years of relevant structural engineering experience with a focus on building projects.
- PE licensure in North Carolina (or ability to obtain via reciprocity); SE licensure is a strong plus.
- Proficient in structural analysis/design software (e.g., RISA3D, RAM, SAP2000, ETABS).
- Skilled in BIM and drafting tools (AutoCAD, Revit); able to lead and review drawing production. Design portfolio will be required to be provided as part of the interview process.
- Strong knowledge of building codes and structural systems, including design for all major load types and conditions.
- Knowledge or exposure to close coordination with Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing engineers for building systems.
- Demonstrated experience with permitting and coordination with local jurisdictions.
- Strong communication, leadership, and client-facing skills.
- Business development experience within a consulting environment.
- Familiarity with steel fabrication platforms (e.g., SDS2, Tekla) is a plus.
- Comfortable managing multiple projects and mentoring a multidisciplinary team.
- Able to travel to project sites and navigate construction environments when needed.
