GENERAL DESCRIPTION: This is an entry level position to train to become a Firefighter/EMT, involving academic and on-the job training and development in preparation to become State certified as a Firefighter and progress to a Firefighter/EMT with Sumter County Fire & EMS. Employees in this position are expected to be able to perform all work tasks, adhere to academic and position schedules, and comply with all county and department policies and procedures and ensure the maintenance of department equipment, apparatus, and stations.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Attends Fire Academy classes and other formal training programs established to qualify the incumbent for State certification as a Firefighter.Attends technical programs and other formal training programs established to qualify the incumbent for State certification as an EMT.Participates in fire training drills and attends training classes as established by the fire department and participates in company details, such as, but not limited to, pre-fire planning, fire prevention details, and other areas specifically focused on entry level training topic.Participates as an observer during emergency and non-emergency responses until certification and then participates to level of State of Florida certification in Firefighting and Emergency Medical ServicesMaintains and checks fire equipment for serviceability and assists in minor repairs and maintenance of equipment as directed. Performs routine cleaning of apparatus and facilities daily.As required, attend training sessions for firefighting, rescue techniques, emergency medical care, and other training areas.Prepares and submits routine records and reports.Assists in departmental activities in preparation for a significant emergency, such as a hurricane, other natural or manmade disasters, and assists with aftermath activities such as inspection, clean up, and disaster relief.Participates in fire prevention activities and training to improve public awareness of fire safety.Essential functions as described in the current edition of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1582.Abides by department and county policies, represents the department and county in a professional, courteous and considerate manner.Maintains regular physical attendance during normal work hours as assigned at one of the county’s offices or work facilities with the ability to work evenings, nights, weekends, work shifts, callbacks, and holidays as required.(These essential job functions are not to be construed as a complete statement of all duties performed.
