Job Summary
Sun Tribe EPC (“ST EPC”) is Virginia’s premier utility scale Solar design and build firm focused on designing and constructing sub 20MW ground mounted Solar Photovoltaic (PV) facilities. The Senior Civil Superintendent diligently plans, directs, and oversees the site work construction of projects. As a critical part of the delivery team, the Senior Civil Superintendent is accountable for civil construction outcomes of the project. They will develop civil construction and vegetation strategies during preconstruction and will monitor, manage, and drive civil construction aspects to stay on budget and schedule while ensuring compliance with safety, environmental, quality, design, and Sun Tribe core values throughout the course of construction. The Senior Civil Superintendent will oversee several projects concurrently and will manage and mentor junior Civil Superintendents.
This position reports directly to the Vice President, Construction and works closely with other key staff including, construction management, project management, project engineering, quality, EHS, clients, and subcontractors.
Responsibilities
\n- Actively monitors site work scopes.
- Manages time across projects to be present during critical phases of civil construction.
- Organizes and optimizes workflow of civil construction driving production to meet or beat project schedule milestones.
- Actively manages stabilization, site maintenance, dust control, and environmental remediation strategies.
- Cultivates a site culture that is respectful, compliant, safe and productive.
- Supports Plan of the Day meetings and 3-week look ahead generation.
- Supports plan variance documentation and recovery efforts.
- Maintains an accurate view of production rates and report regularly to CM, PM, and Leadership.
- Drives subcontractor accountability and production while meeting safety, environmental, and quality standards.
- Leads construction issue resolution efforts pertaining to site work.
- Coordinates with Construction Managers and manages subcontractor activity to close observations.
- Adequately prepares for incoming inclement weather to reduce discharge risk on active projects.
- Develops site specific civil quality plans, delegates as necessary to subordinate superintendents.
- Performs routine audits of active civil work and documents compliance or corrective actions to fulfill quality plan obligations.
- Implements and oversees quality control measures to ensure the highest level of workmanship and compliance with specifications.
- Coordinates and schedules survey and required geotechnical inspections.
- Conducts independent feature verification.
- Performs daily site walks to document environmental attributes.
- Participates in Civil Drawing reviews and site visits for preconstruction projects.
- Develops site work construction and sequence strategies.
- Reviews and supplements Subcontractor Scopes of Work creation/refinement with respect to earth work.
- Develops project specific stabilization strategies.
- Actively participates in subcontractor RFP processes: facilitating site visits, RFP solicitation, bid qualification and subcontractor down selection.
- Onboards new civil subcontractors to the project.
- Develops detailed project plans, schedules, and standard work instructions.
- Inherits the responsibilities of the Construction Manager in the event of unplanned absence.
- Inherits the responsibilities of the Construction Manager for a project during planned absences of up to 1 day per week.
- Other duties as assigned to support overall success of the organization.
- Directly manages subordinate Civil Superintendents ensuring adequate support across the active fleet.
- Supports organizational success by supporting Construction Managers & Civil Superintendents in the performance of their work.
- Brings to bear across the company’s project portfolio subject matter expertise in project construction during key moments of the project lifecycles.
- Contributes actively to process improvement and to the development of the company’s set of Construction Management tools.
- Supports leadership as a thought partner on the flow of construction work through the organization, delegation of resources, and programmatic construction strategy.
- Helps define construction strategy through formal processes during project preconstruction.
- Serves as key construction leader for the company’s high priority projects.
- High School Diploma or GED required, Bachelor’s degree in construction management or related field preferred
- At least four (4) years’ experience supervising or performing civil work required
- Detailed understanding of civil engineering drawings required
- Detailed understanding VA DEQ regulations and DEQ SWM/ESC Handbook required
- VA DEQ erosion and sediment control inspector preferred
- Responsible Land Disturber preferred
- OSHA 30 preferred
- Strong computer skills (MS Outlook, MS Excel, MS Word, Slack, Procore)
- Ability to work well with others in a construction environment
- Proven experience directing sub-contractors and or tradespeople
- Honest, reliable, self-aware, and conscientious
- Strong interpersonal communication skills, both verbal and written
- Strong planning, organization, and prioritization skills
- Commitment to stop work in unsafe conditions

- Must be able to traverse and inspect all areas of jobsite in all types of weather; this may include walking, climbing, reaching, bending, crawling, or stretching
- Requires approximately 10% office work and 90% field work – construction planning is expected to take place at the Sun Tribe EPC office adopting Sun Tribe EPC policies with respect to work from home flexibility.

- Exposure to characteristic construction site hazards
- Standard work hours may be changed based on emergencies, bad weather, and other issues at the jobsite
- Some evening and weekend work is required
