Job Title: Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON)

Location: 3935 Sunnyside Drive, Pannill Health Center

Hours: Full Time, Salary Role, Participates in On-Call Rotation Schedule

Position Overview & General Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of the Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) is to support the Director of Nursing (DON) in regular collaboration, planning, developing, and supervising the activities of team members. This position plays a vital role in assisting with the development, direction, coordination, and implementation of nursing services, ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal guidelines. The ADON provides leadership and technical guidance to nursing team members, ensuring that residents are supported at their highest level of functioning. A successful Assistant Director of Nursing is responsible, attentive, knowledgeable, and professional. The ADON maintains high standards of care, positive organizational culture, and ensures that nursing practices meet exceptional quality standards, all while promoting a supportive and unified team environment.

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Works collaboratively with the Director of Nursing (DON) to develop, implement, and evaluate programs that enhance both resident care, familial relations, and employee satisfaction. Supports daily functions, and departmental needs.
  • Promotes unity and encouragement among team members and across interdisciplinary teams.
  • Plays a consistent and pivotal role in shaping department culture, takes responsibility for clinical outcomes, overall morale, team performance.
  • Supervises and mentors nursing staff, offering support, training, and performance management. Delegates and oversees daily nursing operations; assigns tasks, monitors performance, and supports goals.
  • Executes supervisory duties in accordance with Sunnyside policies to maximize employee contributions, including but not limited to; recruiting, hiring, and training team members; planning, delegating, and overseeing work; managing performance; addressing concerns; and resolving conflicts efficiently and effectively in collaboration with the DON.
  • Completes daily rounds, and spends time on the floor. Understands the importance of building mutually beneficial relationship(s) with stakeholders (team members, residents, resident family members, visitors, volunteers, providers, etc).
  • Collaborates regularly with DON, MDS, Staff Development, Clinical Coordinators, Infection Control Preventionist, and additional team members.
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities and supports nursing team backup on a 24-hour per day, 7-day-per-week basis. Comfortable acting in the absence of the DON or scheduler.
  • Assists in staff recruitment and staff development; works closely with HR to recruit, review applications, conduct interviews, support a successful onboarding experience, and/or meaningful retention initiatives.

Compliance, Operations, & Clinical Oversight

  • Assists in the development, communication, and implementation of policies, budgetary guidelines, and strategies that properly reflect Sunnyside’s operational mission, goals, and values.
  • Ensures compliance with regulatory standards; ensures the nursing department adheres to healthcare regulations, policies, and guidelines.
  • Monitors and tracks clinical outcomes; identifying areas of strength or improvement.
  • Ensures that incident reports are completed accurately and in a timely fashion.
  • Practices clinical judgment to determine appropriate nursing interventions
  • Provides direct care as needed; may step in to provide nursing care or assist in emergencies or staffing shortages.
  • Supports care planning and interventions: Participates in interdisciplinary care team meetings and ensures proper care plans are developed and implemented.
  • Stays abreast with changes in healthcare laws, standards, and regulations.
  • Assist in the readiness and preparation of inspections/audits.
  • Assists the Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI), developing and implementing appropriate plans of action.
  • Supports in the acquisition of necessary resources for patient care.
  • Supports infection control practices: works with the Infection Control Preventionist to monitor and maintain infection control practices, tracks infection data, monitors immunization program

Resident Care & Support

  • Plays a key role in the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of resident care
  • Oversees the design, implementation, and evaluation of systems that ensure quality of care and promote resident rights.
  • Regularly reviews the delivery of patient care, ensuring that care is consistent with facility policies, regulatory requirements, and best practices.
  • Takes an active role in resolving patient and family relations with empathy and professionalism, ensures a positive experience for all parties.
  • Supports resident admission and discharge process. Participates in resident care plans

Requirements

  • Education and experience equivalent to an associate’s degree; BSN preferred.
  • Minimum of 2-4 years of nursing experience, preferably in long-term care.
  • Currently licensed nurse through Virginia Board of Nursing; RN Preferred.
  • Strong leadership skills with experience in relationship building, empowering and developing others, conflict management, and cooperation.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Solid critical thinking and discernment, with the ability to make informed decisions in complex situations.
  • Knowledge of computers and comfortable utilizing technology and healthcare software.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Self-directed and results-oriented, demonstrating initiative and follow-through. Ability to work effectively under stressful conditions, maintaining professionalism and composure.
  • Ability to apply knowledge, skills, and experience in a way that is derived from professional standards to develop an opinion or decision about what should be done to best serve Sunnyside residents.

Work Environment

This job operates in a residential-style nursing environment with normal lighting levels (except where lighting is reduced in resident rooms), comfortable temperature ranges, good air quality, ventilation, and low noise levels.

Hours/Schedule

This position typically works Monday-Friday, but requires availability to all shifts depending on need, including but not limited to: providing training, leading meetings, & general oversight. Weekends, nights, and holidays may be required as the workload determines. The Assistant Director of Nursing will be required to work a rotating weekend as the ‘Leader on Duty.’

The employee is frequently required to stand for long periods. Additionally, the employee will routinely sit, stand, reach, lift, bend, kneel, stoop, climb, push, and pull items weighing 60 lbs or less and occasionally more than 60 lbs. The position requires manual dexterity; auditory and visual skills; and the ability to follow written and oral instructions and procedures. Contact with blood, body fluids, and other infectious drainage. Minimal hazards if required Universal Precautions are followed.
