Full Time - 32 hours per week

Expected to "float" between all departments

The primary responsibilities of the Medication Aide include but are not limited to administering medications in safe manner and within regulation requirements, assisting residents with Activities of Daily Living (ADL’s); bathing, dressing, toileting and dining, documenting resident care, while always respecting and promoting resident’s rights and always maintaining a clean and safe home-like environment.  


Qualifications:

  • Must have current Nursing Assistant & Medication Aide licenses through Virginia Board of Nursing.
  • Must have completed the medication training by a state-approved trainer.
  • Ability to process information accurately, make appropriate decisions and take appropriate action based upon the information available.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work with confidential information and maintain its’ integrity.
  • Ability to multi-task while maintaining attention to detail and having good organizational skills.
  • Ability to work in stressful environment and deal with medical emergency situations.
  • Strong customer service skills; maintain a hospitality approach to engaging with all individuals.

Requirements

  • Administer medication(s) per unit dose system. – Complete the medication pass within regulation timeframe and without error. Document/sign all medication administration records daily. Push/manipulate medication cart.
  • Report all significant resident issues to a licensed nurse. – Report all issues as soon as noted or within timely manner.
  • Know classifications of each medication administered and facilitate resident awareness of medication purpose and effect. – Answer questions, giving appropriate information but never give medical advice or diagnosis.
  • Know and interpret medical terminology and abbreviations. – Use medical terminology appropriately in administration of medications.
  • Follow proper procedures for pouring/preparing medications, various instillations and treatments. Measure and pour medications using aseptic technique and accuracy.
  • Analyze and comprehend medication types and dosages, as well as recognizes their action and administration precautions. – Demonstrate knowledge of medications and administration techniques.
  • Store and secure all medications per regulations. – Keep medicine cabinet within direct view at all times, never leave it unattended, keep locked. Keep medication cart within direct view at all times, keep locked when unattended.
  • Document medication errors. – Document all medication errors on incident report and report to staff nurse.
  • Understand implications of Residents’ Rights regarding medication, treatment decisions and confidentiality. – Protect rights of residents at all times.
  • Report resident’s refusal to take medication to licensed nurse. – Record and report all refusals in appropriate manner.
  • Keep resident environment safe and clean by cleaning and disinfecting medication storage area. – Maintain cleanliness of medication cabinet and restock supplies for oncoming shifts.
  • Ensure that each resident receives individualized care according to their needs. – Thoroughly document all services provided for every shift.
  • Correct safety issues regarding resident-care environment or equipment and complete maintenance or housekeeping requests as appropriate to keep environment free of unnecessary risks. – Correct immediately or report them to supervisor. Complete requests as necessary.
  • Prepare residents and transports them to beauty shop, physical therapy, activities and for scheduled outside appointments as needed. – Have residents ready and to appointed places consistently.
  • Record/report vital signs and pertinent information. – Document care given accurately. Report all abnormal TPR & BP’s to staff nurse promptly. Record resident information on mood/behavior forms, ADL flow sheets and daily care flow sheets.
  • Communicate appropriately with team members, giving careful consideration to tone of voice and choice of words. – Demonstrate good judgment with regard to communication style.
  • Operate patient care equipment such as, but not limited to electric and manual high/low hospital bed, wheelchair, mechanical lifts, scales, thermometers, etc. in order to perform essential job duties on a daily basis. – Use all equipment safely and effectively.
  • Take direction from staff nurse and ensure assignments/instructions are understood. – Carry out all assigned work with minimal reminders.
  • Utilize time to best advantage to meet job requirements and residents’ needs. – Answer call bells, alarms, etc. promptly. Accrue minimal resident complaints. Ensure staff memebers do not waste time with non-work stuff or loiter at nurses’ station.
  • Conduct walk-through of Assisted Living areas of responsibility for every shift. – Be aware of your residents; their daily routines, schedule appointments, etc. Account for all residents. Check building for security.
  • Ensure the building is secure at all designated times. – Lock outside doors at night and unlock in the morning according to the schedule.
