Contract: 172 Days

SUMMARY: 

Under direction, interprets/transliterates Signing Exact English or other manual sign system, and vice versa, to facilitate communication between hearing and deaf/hard of hearing individuals; serve as a liaison between deaf/hard of hearing students, hearing students and teachers/staff; and perform related work as required.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Have sufficient knowledge to be able to interpret in a variety of school settings and subjects.
  • Facilitate visual accessibility
  • Interpret in all academic situations and in all student service areas.
  • Have the skill to match a variety of language and cognitive needs.
  • Position self in a location that provides the best distance, lighting, background and angle for the student viewing of teacher, media and interpreter. Interpreter will be required to stand or sit for long periods of time.
  • Cooperate with teacher in receiving an overview of coming week’s work to become familiar with content and technical vocabulary.
  • Direct student’s questions to teacher and teacher’s questions to student.
  • Interpret communication and interaction between hearing and hearing-impaired students as appropriate.
  • Provide appropriate input as requested for record keeping of program data.
  • Maintain proficiency in receptive and expressive language skills through acquisition of PDUs and/or CEUs.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all private conversations between school staff and students concerning personal problems or grades.
  • Provides information and orientation to deaf/hard of hearing students in emergency situations.
  • Report to appropriate personnel any information that could be detrimental to the hearing-impaired student, other students, or to school.
  • Understand role in performing behavior management methods in classroom.
  • Attend IEP (Individual Education Plan) meetings as either an interpreter or as a participant of the team, but not as both.
  • Adapt, accommodate, modify and supplement curriculum as specified by the IEP team and directed by the special education case manager.
  • Encourage independence in student and avoid development of inappropriate dependence within the student/interpreter relationship.
  • Works collaboratively with the student’s educational team and/or other sign language interpreters.
  • Participate in activities, in-services and skill building workshops to improve knowledge in interpreting, transliterating the educational process and issues relating to deaf culture.
  • Orient staff and students on the interpreter’s function. Primary responsibilities and diverse roles.
  • Adhere to the tenets of the Registry of Interpreter for the Deaf Code of Ethics or any official revised versions.
  • Perform other reasonable duties that from time to time may be assigned to meet the usual and unusual demands placed on the organization.
  • Comply with ESD Performance Standards.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Individual will hold a valid driver’s license and have reliable, insured transportation for required travel between schools.


EDUCATION / WORK EXPERIENCE:

An Interpreter training program and/or college course work required.  Achieve a passing score of 3.5 or above on the EIPA Performance Test or hold RID NIC, CI or CT Certification and

     A).   Hold a Bachelor’s or Associate’s Degree from an Interpreter Education Program or in a related educational field; or

     B).   Achieve a passing score on the EIPA Written Test

 

SKILLS:

  • Current CPR training preferred.
  • Accurately interpret spoken language to sign language and interpret sign to spoken language
  • Demonstrate interest in and aptitude for, working with children.
  • Ability to demonstrate an attitude of respect and sensitivity toward students with

widely varied backgrounds, abilities, socioeconomic and educational status.

  • Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS 

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

 

While performing the duties of this job, individual will regularly be required to reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. Individual will stand or sit for extended periods of time and move across uneven terrain. Will occasionally lift and / or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
