Assistant Camp Director – Sunrise Day Camp Pearl River
Sunrise Day Camp, for children ages 3 ½ - 16, is the only dedicated full summer day camp in the world for children with cancer and their siblings. It is a camp designed to meet the emotional, social, recreational and physical needs of these children while allowing them to enjoy the comforts and safety of their own homes at night.
Sunrise Day Camp offers a full, multi-week summer activity program plus year- round camp-like programs. These additional programs take place at our campgrounds and other locations that provide exclusive use of their facilities.
Sunrise Day Camp is offered free of charge to all children being treated for cancer and their siblings on a non-sectarian basis.
The camp dates are June 30th – August 15th, with mandatory staff training sessions in May/June (dates TBD). This position is part time, year round, and full time during the summer.
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Assistant Camp Director to help lead and oversee the camp’s day-to-day operations, ensuring a safe, fun, and supportive environment for our campers and staff.
As the Assistant Camp Director, you will work closely with the Camp Director to provide leadership and guidance to camp staff while fostering an atmosphere of teamwork, inclusion, and positivity. Overall Responsibilities
- Assist the Camp Director in the overall operation and supervision of the camp
- Work with Camp Director and Program Director to develop and maintain the summer program for campers, camper families and staff
- Assist and help coordinate the set-up and break down of camp
- Assist Camp Director and Registrar in all Open House programs, registration and parent orientation
- Assist the Camp Director to recruit, train, and supervise camp counselors and staff. Provide ongoing support and guidance to ensure the success of the team.
- Work with the Program Director to oversee all special events and camp-wide programs
- Attend and implement Specialty and Unit Head staff meetings
- Plan and implement staff appreciation events during and at the end of the summer
- Assist or lead family and donor tours when needed
- Work closely with Transportation Coordinator with arrivals/dismissals by bus and car
- Assist Camp Director with all parent communication
- Be part of coverage rotation for camp day between 7:30am and 6:00pm
Pre-Opening Camp Responsibilities:
- Assemble camper and staff groups
- Prepare unit head and general staff orientations
Manage daily camper and staff attendance
- Create a weekly schedule, special events schedule, and rainy-day schedule
- Be available for Parent Orientation and Camp Tours
Summer Responsibilities:
- Keep group lists current with new enrolled campers
- Work closely with the specialist coordinator to keep track of specialists and activities
- Serve as our swim liaison
- Work closely with Program Director to support programming needs
Assist with creating and implementing large camp events
- Collaborate with the Behavioral Specialist and other staff to ensure that campers’ individual needs are met and that the camp environment is inclusive and supportive
Oversee daily activities
- Manage and resolve any camper or staff issues that arise in a positive and professional manner
- Coordinate and run all necessary meetings along with Camp Director in advance of camp and throughout the summer
- Assist in monitoring and maintaining health and safety standards
