STARTING RATE OF PAY : $19.00 / hr. ($19.00 - $21.00 / hr., dependent upon experience)

Job Summary :
The Phlebotomist is responsible to take blood samples from patients / residents in a skilled nursing facility setting. The phlebotomist prepares the testing cart with all the proper tools, keeping patients / residents calm while drawing blood and correctly labeling samples for further analysis in a medical laboratory. Phlebotomists are responsible for efficiently and accurately performing blood draws on patients / residents. The phlebotomist reports to and is supervised by the Director of Nursing Services.
Job Responsibilities :
- Preparing patients / residents after drawing blood
- Explaining blood draw procedures to patients / residents and answering any questions about the process
- Following all health and safety protocols and procedures to maintain sanitary work areas
- Gathering medical testing materials, including needles, sample vials, blood storage bags and test tubes
- Verifying patient information and labeling blood samples properly and correctly
- Identify patients and their personal information prior to lab draw
- Accurately updating patient information in PCC
- Reassure patients and help them remain calm during blood draws
- Arrange daily activities based on urgency of requests for fluid samples
- Determine the right venipuncture method based on patient age, health etc.
- Find veins that are suitable for puncture
- Draw blood using sterilized needles, vials and other equipment
- Ensure optimal quality and quantity of samples
- Label samples correctly and send or deliver them for testing
- Answer patient questions and provide useful information
- Keep accurate records on fluid specimens and tests
- Adhere to all relevant health and infection control standards
- Responsible to transport all lab specimens to laboratory office
REQUIRED SKILLS & ABILITIES :
EDUCATION :
Minimum : High School Diploma or Equivalent
Preferred : Associate degree
EXPERIENCE :
Minimum : Prior phlebotomy experience required
Preferred : Prior phlebotomy experience with elderly population
