PURPOSE OF YOUR JOB POSITION

The primary purpose of your job position is to assist the Director of Nursing in the planning, organizing, development and directing of the day-to-day functions of the Nursing Services Department in accordance with current Federal, State, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations that govern our facility, and as may be directed by the Administrator, Director of Nursing, and / or the Medical Director to ensure that the highest degree of quality care is maintained at all times.

DELEGATION OF AUTHORITY

As the Assistant Director of Nursing, you are delegated the administrative authority, responsibility, and accountability necessary for carrying out your assigned duties.

JOB FUNCTIONS

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist the Director of Nursing in the planning, developing, organizing, implementing, evaluating, and directing of the day-to-day functions of the Nursing Services Department in accordance with current rules, regulations, and guidelines that govern this facility.
  • Promote a team approach to the operation of the Nursing Department.
  • Oversee the day-to-day operation of the nursing units throughout the facility. Continually evaluate and recommend procedural changes to maximize efficiency and operation of the Nursing Department.
  • Serve as the “contact person” for residents and their families for issues related to the Nursing Department.
  • Monitor medication passes and treatment schedules to ensure that medications are being administered as ordered and that treatments are provided as scheduled.
  • Report medication errors to the Director of Nursing.
  • Participate in developing, maintaining, and updating written policies and procedures that govern day-to-day functions of the Nursing Department.
  • Assist with periodically updating the Mission and Goals for the Nursing Department.
  • Assist in developing methods for coordinating nursing services with other resident services to ensure the continuity of the residents’ total plan of care.
  • Assist the Director of Nursing to ensure that all nursing personnel follow their respective job descriptions. Participate in developing, maintaining, and periodically updating written job descriptions for each level of nursing personnel.
  • Perform administrative duties such as completing medical forms, reports, evaluations, studies, charting, etc., as necessary.
  • Ensure that reference material maintained at the nurses’ stations is current. Recommend to the Director of Nursing any written material that will assist the Nursing Department in meeting the day-to-day needs of the residents.
  • Participate in the facility’s Quality Assessment and Assurance program.
  • Participate in the survey process made by authorized government agencies.
  • Other duties that may become necessary, or as directed by your department director, and / or the Administrator.

Requirements :

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Must posses a valid unencumbered Illinois Registered Nurse license.

Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing preferred, Associate Degree in Nursing or diploma in Nursing accepted with appropriate work experience in supervision and long-term care.

EXPERIENCE

Must have, as a minimum, three years experience as a supervisor in long-term care facility, hospital, or other related health care facility.

Training experience in Rehabilitative and Restorative Nursing practices preferred, but not required.

SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be able to read, write, and speak the English language in a legible and understandable manner.
  • Must possess a strong working knowledge of basic computer functions.
  • Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.
  • Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies / personnel and the general public.
  • Must be knowledgeable of nursing and medical practices and procedures, as well a laws, regulations, and guidelines that pertain to long-term care.
  • Must possess leadership and supervisory ability and willingness to work harmoniously with professional and non-professional staff.
  • Must have patience, tact, cheerful disposition and enthusiasm, as well as be willing to handle difficult situations.
  • Must be able to maintain good rapport with personnel and maintain employee morale.
  • PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be able to move intermittently throughout the workday.
  • Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.
  • Must possess sight / hearing senses, or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately so that the requirements of this position can be fully met.
  • Must function independently, have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with residents, personnel and support agencies.
  • Must be in good general health and demonstrate emotional stability.
  • Must meet the general health requirements set forth by the policies of this facility, which include a medical and physical examination.
  • Must be able to relate to and work with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and at times, hostile people within the facility.
  • May be necessary to assist in the evacuation of residents during emergency situations.
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds and push / pull of 50 pounds force.
