Company Overview:
Our client has an exciting opportunity for a Director of Law Department, a highly experienced legal General Counsel with a strong background in civil litigation and local government law.
Position Summary:
The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 7 years of legal experience, including at least 4 years in local government law, and a Juris Doctorate from an accredited institution.
Responsibilities:
- Provide expert legal counsel and representation to the Board of Commissioners, Mayor, County Administrator, county officers, department directors, boards, authorities, and employees.
- Oversee and manage complex civil litigation, administrative legal matters, and regulatory compliance.
- Supervise legal and investigative staff, ensuring high-quality legal support across all governmental functions.
- Conduct legal research and provide advisory opinions on a variety of local government issues.
- Interpret laws and regulations, advising governmental officials on their implications.
- Represent governmental officers and employees in court and administrative proceedings.
- Draft, review, and approve contracts, resolutions, ordinances, policies, and legal documents.
- Lead negotiations with attorneys, insurance representatives, and external stakeholders to reach favorable settlements.
- Monitor and manage the Law Department budget and outside counsel expenses.
- Develop and implement legal training programs for elected officials, department heads, and employees.
- Attend County Commission meetings and other government proceedings to provide legal guidance.
- Supervise internal attorneys and external legal counsel in handling litigation matters.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant federal, state, and local laws to ensure compliance and risk mitigation.
Qualifications:
- Juris Doctorate (J.D.) or Doctor of Laws Degree from an accredited institution.
- 7 years of legal experience, with at least 4 years in local government law.
- Active member of the State Bar of Georgia, licensed to practice in the Georgia Court of Appeals and Georgia Supreme Court.
- Strong knowledge of federal and state laws, local ordinances, and court procedures.
- Extensive experience in civil litigation, administrative law, and local government legal proceedings.
- Proven expertise in drafting and interpreting legal documents, ordinances, and resolutions.
- Excellent negotiation, legal research, and contract review skills.
