The Director of Activities at Sunshine Kids Pediatric Day Center plays a critical leadership role in designing, implementing, and managing a therapeutic, engaging activity program that supports the developmental, emotional, and social needs of children within the PPEC (Prescribed Pediatric Extended Care) setting. This role ensures alignment with individualized medical and therapeutic care plans, fostering a nurturing and stimulating environment that promotes participation, joy, and growth.
Key Responsibilities
Program Development
Design and execute age-appropriate, developmentally tailored activities for children with medical complexities.
Collaborate with interdisciplinary medical and therapy teams to align activities with each childs care plan and therapeutic goals.
Daily Activity Management
Lead both individual and group activities including, but not limited to: arts and crafts, sensory exploration, music, educational play, and physical engagement.
Adapt activity scheduling to accommodate medical appointments, feeding, therapies, and rest periods.
Team Supervision and Training
Oversee and mentor activity staff, ensuring all team members are adequately trained in program facilitation and safety protocols.
Deliver ongoing coaching and support professional development to cultivate engagement and enhance team performance.
Compliance and Documentation
Ensure all activities meet internal safety protocols, infection control standards, and comply with applicable federal and state regulations.
Maintain comprehensive documentation of daily activities, participant involvement, and outcome evaluations.
Family and Community Engagement
Communicate consistently with families regarding their child's participation, preferences, and progress in activities.
Develop and sustain partnerships with local community resources to enhance and enrich programming options.
Resource and Budget Oversight
Manage the department budget responsibly, ensuring cost-effective procurement of high-quality supplies.
Maintain an organized inventory of activity materials and ensure readiness for scheduled programming.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
Bachelor's degree in child development, Recreation Therapy, Education, or a closely related field.
3-5 years of experience in pediatric healthcare or child-focused environments, including a minimum of 2 years in a supervisory or leadership role.
Skills & Competencies
In-depth knowledge of child development, particularly in children with medical or developmental needs.
Creativity and innovation in developing engaging therapeutic programs.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build trust with children, families, and clinical staff.
Proven leadership skills with a focus on team development, collaboration, and accountability.
Proficiency in digital tools used for scheduling, record-keeping, and reporting.
Certifications
Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) or equivalent preferred.
CPR and First Aid Certification (or willingness to obtain within 30 days of hire).
Working Conditions
This position is located in a pediatric medical care environment, requiring regular interaction with children, families, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.
