Job Summary : Peer Support Specialists [PSS] act as a voice for the needs of participants within the agency, offering peer support to individuals through their shared lived experience in their recovery journey. PSSs act as a positive role model for individuals finding and sustaining their own person directed recovery plan. Tasks performed include assisting participants in identifying self-directed goals for recovery, linking them to community resources, attending appointments with them via public transport, tracking their goals, supporting them in the treatment model of their choice, modeling effective coping techniques, utilizing self-help strategies based on peers own lived experience, and supporting them in advocating for themselves to effectively obtain services.

Duties / Responsibilities :

  • Maintain effective communication with all staff, programs, and community partners.
  • Ensure that all areas utilized by participants and staff are clean, organized, and left in an orderly manner during and after each shift. This may include, but not limited to, cleaning waste, soiled clothing, dirty dishes, etc.
  • Adhere to all state and federal privacy and security regulations applicable to the program, and to Sunstone Way's policies and agreements regarding confidentiality, privacy, and security.
  • Process resident / client intakes and discharges with completion of associated forms.
  • Attend supervision, travel to and from staff meetings & any appropriate community professional meetings.
  • Requires a willingness to lead, take charge, and offer opinions and direction.
  • Performing outreach by explaining peer services and obtaining informed consent to identified participants.
  • Work 1 : 1 with enrolled participants in areas of health, mental health and recovery to perform advocacy, community assistance, and to identify when goals are completed or need to be amended on individual service plans (ISP's).
  • Communicate pertinent information effectively with site staff and the Wraparound Team.
  • Complete all required reports, case notes and documentation in a timely manner.
  • Attend all case consultations, case review meetings and exit interviews as required.
  • Maintain effective communication with all staff, programs, housing providers and community partners.
  • Create and / or facilitate groups or community events that support the mission of the agency.
  • Obtain participant feedback in individual or group formats that can be used to assess, review or influence the operations or functioning of agency and program policies and practices.
  • Provide advocacy and resources around harm reduction, trauma informed services, culturally specific referrals, and mental health and recovery services.
  • Plan, execute, and maintain community events and community calendar.
  • Lead and facilitate community meetings.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of the facility.
  • Guide participants through stages of change via motivational interviewing.
  • Provide listening spaces (individuals / groups) to capture values and impact.
  • Keep team members updated with any new and relevant information pertaining to participants.
  • Collaborate with the team to provide 1 : 1 support with participant medical or housing related appointments as needed.
  • Complete wellness plans and support plans.

Supervisory Responsibilities :

No direct supervision of staff.

Required Skills / Abilities :

  • A willingness to lead, take charge, and offer opinions and direction.
  • Understanding of equity in marginalized communities and the ability to engage in best practices within the peer scope-of-practice.
  • Having a person-centered and trauma informed approach.
  • Supporting participants in self-determination and autonomy in all goal setting and implementation.
  • The ability to work in a shelter setting or other uncontrolled environments where there may be active usage present or evidence of active usage, e.g. paraphernalia, etc.
  • Participating in educational opportunities, maintaining professional networks, attend in person and virtual trainings.
  • Understanding of Housing First and Harm Reduction models.
  • Ability to effectively interact with co-workers and participants with diverse ethnic backgrounds, religious views, political affiliation, cultural backgrounds, lifestyles, and sexual orientations and treat all individuals with respect and dignity.
  • Professional maintenance of appropriate boundaries.
  • Ability to work in an environment where people may be verbally or physically escalated.
  • Maintain calm and compassion under pressure.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records in client databases.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, problem solve, and complete tasks in a timely manner.
  • Willingness to take on responsibilities and challenges.
  • Ability to work autonomously and make independent decisions.
  • Developing participant strategies, plans, or procedures.
  • Ability to maintain regular attendance and be punctual.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Required Experience :

  • 1 year experience working as a peer support.
  • Lived experience with one or more of the following :
  • Current or former consumer of addictions or mental health services;

  • In recovery from addictions; 2 years of verifiable recovery, if applicable
  • Required Qualifications :

    Within 30 days of hire : THW (Traditional Healthcare Worker) Certification in the state of Oregon as a peer in one of the following :

  • PSS : Peer Support Specialist - Adult Mental Health, Adult Addiction
  • PWS : Peer Wellness Specialist - Adult Mental Health, Adult Addiction
  • Once certified, must maintain certification for the duration of employment, and must report any changes or adverse actions to certification in a timely manner.

    Additional eligibility requirements :

  • Sufficient manual dexterity and physical ability to perform assigned tasks.
  • Must be able to pass a background check upon offer.
  • Must be able to work in a drug-free environment.
  • Regular and reliable attendance to all required shifts.
  • Physical Requirements :

  • Ability to lift up to 50lbs
  • Bending, stooping, reaching, sitting, close work, fingering
  • Sitting for extended periods of time
  • Standing for extended periods of time
  • Work environment :

  • Working indoors and outdoors in heat and cold
  • Slippery and uneven walking surfaces
  • Working in close proximity to others
  • Exposure to offensive odors
  • Travel required :

  • Travel to and from other work sites, participant appointments via public transit, and other locations (community professional associations, etc.) as needed, up to 50%.
