What are the responsibilities and job description for the Peace Officer 1 (per diem) position at SUNY Adirondack?
Incumbents in this class perform security and law enforcement related functions at SUNY-Adirondack which include responsibility for maintaining order, for the enforcement of New York State Laws, for the security of College property, and for the safety of students, visitors and staff.
SUNY Adirondack has designated this position as an essential worker. Employees designated in their job description or by the President as essential to operation of the College during an identified period of time are required to work as scheduled or remain at work until released by their supervisor.
The incumbent exercises powers as granted to Peace Officers by the laws of the State of New York and such supplementary powers as may be conferred by the SUNY Adirondack Board of Trustees that are consistent with law. The work is performed under the general supervision of a higher-level supervisor with some latitude allowed for the exercise of independent judgment in carrying out assignments. The incumbent will perform all related duties as required.
Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma; United States Citizenship; Possession of a valid New York State Operator's license at the time of appointment and maintenance of such license throughout the tenure of employment in the position; Eligibility to obtain a firearms license pursuant to Section 400 of the New York State Penal Law; A Campus Public Safety Officer designated as a peace officer must successfully complete an approved Municipal Police Training Council Training Program for Campus Public Safety Officer as described in Section 2.30 of Criminal Procedure Law within one year of the date of appointment and maintain such certification at all times thereafter for the duration of employmentÂ

- Maintains order on campus at all times;Â
- Performs security work, fire prevention and law enforcement;Â
- Patrols building, grounds and parking areas on foot or in a patrol vehicle to maintain order, protect persons and property, control traffic, provide first aid and to prevent trespassing, theft or damage;Â
- Investigates complaints as required;Â
- Secures and checks all doors, windows and entrances to buildings as required;Â
- Assures that all doors and entrances are unlocked for daily activities and classes as required;Â
- Directs and controls traffic on campus roads, grounds and parking areas as required;Â
- Investigates motor vehicle accidents that occur on campus or campus property as required;Â
- Issues parking tickets and Uniform Traffic Citations where authorized and appropriate;Â
- Enforces the College's student conduct and disciplinary procedures;Â
- Enforces NY State and local laws and makes arrests for violations of law as authorized and needed;Â
- Assists motorists, e.g. lock-outs, dead batteries and other vehicular problems;Â
- Gives directions and provides information to students and visitors;Â
- Contacts snow removal contractor/grounds crew when necessary;Â
- Provides reports and maintains an appropriate system of records and reports;Â
- Conducts lost and found activities as appropriate;Â
- Appears in court to testify, provide information, and present evidence;Â
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Supervisor, Assistant Director or Director of Facilities and Public Safety.
