In this position, you’ll be responsible for tasks in the mechanical, building construction, motor equipment, and electrical trades. These tasks may include:
- routine maintenance
- installation and repair tasks
- assisting in troubleshooting systems
- use of power tools, shop equipment, and measuring/testing instruments
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Two years of full-time experience in maintenance or mechanical work under the supervision of a skilled tradesperson; OR completion of an appropriate two year technical school course at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services, such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association-Partnership (NYS CSEA-P) Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program*; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of appropriate technical courses at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services.
When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver’s license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.
Preferred Qualifications

- Successful completion of the NYS CSEA-P Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math coursework, 45 hours of technical communications coursework, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading coursework. It does not include 4,000 hours of on-the-job training, as required for the NYS CSEA-P Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship.
DEPARTMENTAL OPERATING NEEDS
- Ability to assist with:
- installing and maintaining lighting fixtures, outlets, exit signs, and switches
- repairing and painting of interior and exterior surfaces
- installing and repairing doors, walls, windows, window sashes, floors, stairs, railings, glass, furniture, masonry, locks and door hardware, building envelope and drain systems
- installing and repairing plumbing fixtures and steam fitting equipment including traps, spence valve, lines, condensation systems, tube bundles, valves, and some controls
- Ability to read plans, specifications, manuals, and blueprints.
- Ability to understand and follow instructions and read, write, and communicate.
- Record of dependability and past work performance, including a satisfactory time and attendance record.
- Possession of computer skills adequate to work with computerized maintenance management systems and other computerized applications as assigned.
