What are the responsibilities and job description for the After School Sailing Coach(es) - SUNY Maritime College position at SUNY Maritime College?
SUNY Maritime's Waterfront seeks Sailing Coaches for our After-School High School Sailing Team (Spring & Fall) and Adventure (middle & high school) Sailing (Fall only) programs. After-School Coaches will teach and coach sailing for 6th-12th graders of mixed abilities, beginners through experienced racers, in dinghies (RS Quests, FJs, and 420s), keelboats (IC24s, J105), and catamarans (Hobie Waves). Coaches will also help organize and plan practice sessions, clinics, and regattas.
Responsibilities:
- Coach/teach beginner, intermediate, and learn-to-race sailing to 6th-12th grade sailors aligned with plans prepared by Head After-School Sailing Coach
- Serve as a mentor and role model to sailors
- Help ensure a safe and fun learning environment
- Support hosting of high school regattas and clinics (scheduled Saturdays)
- Prepare, maintain, and properly clean and stow all equipment including: fueling powerboats, setting/retrieving marks, ensuring sailboats are properly rigged/derigged, and maintaining classroom space
- Other duties as assigned by the Waterfront Staff
Job Requirements:
Required Qualifications:
- Experience teaching and/or coaching youth sailors
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, especially with a high school aged audience and their parents
- Willingness to collaborate as a team player and take initiative as a leader
- Schedule that allows for commitment to the season
Preferred Qualifications:
- US Sailing Level 1 Instructor
- US Powerboating Safe Powerboat Handling
- Some knowledge of ISSA procedures, regatta management
- Lifeguard certification

Classification and Compensation:
- $16.50/hr - $19/hr, commensurate with experience

- Spring: April 11 - May 19
- Fall: Sept 8 - Oct 27
