Description of the Department:

The Department of Physics is a vibrant department that supports bachelor's degrees in physics, Applied Physics, Adolescent Education - Physics, and minors in Physics and Astronomy. Courses in the department are also cognate requirements for students in most of the natural sciences, engineering, and math programs, as well as students in Elementary Education. The department has well equipped teaching facilities, including state of the art upper division laboratory teaching equipment in Astronomy and Astrophysics, Atomic Physics, Quantum Mechanics, Optics, Nanophysics, Nuclear Physics and Condensed Matter Physics. The department maintains strong undergraduate research programs in Astrophysics, Atomic Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, Nanophysics and Nuclear Physics.

The department has a complete array of equipment for the growth, property investigation and device fabrication based on nanomaterials, equipment for the assembly and testing of rechargeable lithium ion batteries, an Atomic Force Microscope, a Newport solar simulator, thin film fabrication facilities, ultrahigh vacuum chamber, electric transport measurement devices, an electronics lab, a semi-automated astronomical observatory including a 16" Meade, a LHIres spectrograph, two SBIG CCDs and several smaller telescopes. The department operates a state-of-the-art Spitz Digital Planetarium that can seat 35. We regularly provide shows to local schools and the surrounding community and have developed several innovative shows using the latest data/images from several sources. We regularly mentor students undertaking on/off campus research/internship experiences as well as at leading research institutions overseas.

The Department of Physics at the State University of New York at Oswego invites applications for the position of a Lecturer of Physics.

Posting Date: February 5, 2025

Review Date: Review of applications will begin early Spring and will continue until the position is filled.

Compensation: Salary is commensurate with experience but will not be below a minimum salary of $55,000.

Description of Responsibilities: The Lecturer of Physics will teach Physics courses and General Education courses in the Physics major.

The Lecturer will also:

  • Help maintain and improve the department's various undergraduate programs into vibrant cutting edge courses.
  • Be expected to play a part in the administration of the department and the University as a whole. Participate in academic advisement and career mentorship of undergraduate physics students.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Physics or related field by time of appointment.
  • Clearly articulated understanding and commitment to equity, inclusion, diversity issues (evidenced by diversity statement).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to contribute to the department's commitment to a rich diverse environment that nurtures and trains the next generation of scientists, especially those from underrepresented groups.
  • Post-doctoral experience.
  • Experience teaching Physics and Astronomy courses to a diverse undergraduate audience and/or mentoring undergraduates in research projects.
