ABOUT THE COURT 
Los Angeles Superior Court is the largest unified trial court in the United States. Its 580 judges and commissioners work in one of the 36 facilities within the Court's 12 judicial districts and are supported by more than 4,800 full-time Court employees. The Court has an annual budget of more than $1 billion. Located in Southern California, Los Angeles County is geographically one of the nation's largest counties, covering 4,752 square miles and, with over 10,400,000 residents, is also one of its most populous counties.

ABOUT THE POSITION
Associate Self-Help Attorneys provide legal information and services to self-represented litigants in support of the Los Angeles Superior Court's Self-Help programs.

Associate Self-Help Attorneys may be employed for a maximum of three years on a limited term basis. Employment is "At Will".  Associate Self-Help Attorneys may only practice law within the scope of their duties as employees of the Court and are prohibited by Court policy from any outside practice of law during the course of their employment. This prohibition includes giving legal advice, receiving fees, and/or appearing in any court on behalf of another person.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
To qualify, you must meet the following requirements at the time of application:

Graduation with a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school -AND- admission to practice law before the Supreme Court of the State of California -AND- a member of the California State Bar in good standing. 

Those that took the California State Bar Examination and are awaiting results may also apply.*

Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements
A valid California Class C driver's license or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

*Applicants that took the California State Bar Examination and are awaiting results must provide proof of successfully passing the California State Bar Examination to be placed on the eligibility list. Proof must be emailed to rmurillo2@lacourt.org. Failure to submit proof of admission to the California State Bar by the application deadline date will result in your application being disqualified.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
  • Ability to communicate clearly, verbally and in writing, in other languages in addition to English
  • Pro bono, volunteer or paid experience providing legal assistance to self-represented or low-income litigants 
  • Completion of one or more terms of volunteer service in JusticeCorps, other AmeriCorps, or other similar service programs
EDUCATION VERIFICATION
To receive credit, a legible copy of your diploma or transcript (unofficial acceptable) detailing the degree conferred and the name of the educational institution must be attached to your online application. Failure to submit the required documents at the time of application will result in your application being disqualified.  Once the application is submitted, you will not be able to edit or add documents.

Foreign studies must be evaluated by an academic credential evaluation agency and deemed to be equivalent to degrees from the United States. For a list of acceptable evaluation agencies, please visit www.naces.org or http://aice-eval.org/. Foreign studies submitted without acceptable evaluation will be rejected.

Qualifying evaluation of education, training and experience based on submitted application materials and supplemental questionnaire.
