Job Description: Escort Driver
Job Title: Escort Driver – Asphalt Construction (Wide Load/Heavy Machinery)
Reports To: Fleet Manager / Site Manager
Location: Central VA Region
Job Type: Full-time/Contract
Job Overview:
The Escort Driver is responsible for safely escorting oversized or wide load shipments of asphalt construction machinery, equipment, and materials to and from construction sites. The role involves traveling over various roadways, following local and state regulations, and ensuring the safe and legal transport of large equipment to support asphalt construction operations.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Escort Wide Load Transport:
o Escort heavy machinery and asphalt construction equipment to and from job sites.
o Ensure all required permits and documents are in place for oversized loads.
o Coordinate with transportation and logistics teams to ensure safe and efficient routes.
o Ensure proper signage, flags, and other safety protocols are in place during transport.
o Work in tandem with the lead transport vehicle to guide the convoy safely through traffic, intersections, and tight spaces.
2. Safety and Compliance:
o Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations regarding oversized load transportation.
o Maintain a safety-first mindset and enforce safety protocols for both equipment and crew members.
o Monitor traffic and road conditions to avoid hazards and delays.
o Conduct pre-trip inspections of escort vehicles to ensure it is safe and operational.
3. Communication:
o Maintain constant communication with the driver of the large machinery and other vehicles in the convoy.
o Communicate any road obstacles, detours, or hazards to the team and adjust routes as needed.
o Coordinate with local authorities or law enforcement when required to assist in road closures or escorts.
4. Documentation and Reporting:
o Ensure all documentation for the transport of oversized loads is accurate and up to date.
o Report any accidents, near-misses, or issues with the load to the appropriate supervisor.
o Track and report any delays or issues encountered during transport.
5. Additional Responsibilities:
o Assist with traffic control and road safety in the vicinity of construction sites.
o Maintain and clean the escort vehicle to ensure it is in optimal working condition.
o Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications:
Valid Driver’s License. Escort License is not required but can be attained through job training.
Experience in escorting wide loads, particularly in the construction or heavy equipment industry, preferred.
Knowledge of regulations regarding oversized load transport.
Ability to operate escort vehicles safely under varying weather and traffic conditions.
Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Attention to detail and excellent problem-solving skills.
Strong organizational skills and ability to handle multiple tasks.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
Ability to sit or stand for extended periods during travel.
Ability to climb in and out of the escort vehicle as needed.
Must be able to drive long distances and work in varied weather conditions.
Working Conditions:
Travel to and from construction sites, sometimes over long distances and varying terrain.
Potential for evening, weekend, or overtime work depending on project deadlines and site schedules.
Occasional exposure to construction site environments and road hazards
