The Field Mechanic II is responsible for the hands-on maintenance and operation of fleet equipment and trucks including repairs. This position maintains heavy construction vehicles and equipment such as backhoes, mini trackhoes, hydro excavators, air brake trailers, lowboys, Class 6, 7 and 8 trucks, other heavy equipment and fleet vehicles. They work closely with other team members to ensure that all equipment functions correctly and meets the industry standards and safety regulations. This position requires all trucks and equipment to be kept in good working order, organizing necessary repairs to keep equipment and trucks working consistently in the field. The Heavy Duty Mechanic responds in a timely fashion to request for repairs, both scheduled and unscheduled, by assessing needs within time constraints. Their role will also be going out into the field and running a Field Service Truck.
Roles and Responsibilities :
- Installing and configuring equipment, systems and vehicles in the field.
- Performs diagnostic inspections to ensure optimal performance of the equipment.
- Diagnose faults and malfunctions of truck and equipment in a timely fashion.
- Perform necessary repairs or replacements to maintain working order of all trucks and equipment.
- Completes DOT Annual Inspections and Preventive Maintenance on vehicles, trailers, and equipment.
- Overhauls and repairs, clutch systems, brake systems, charging systems starter systems, cooling system, exhaust systems, electrical systems and other major components of vehicles and equipment.
- Welds and fabricates various projects and / or repairs using MIG and stick welds.
- Works with a variety of engines including small, diesel, and gas engines.
- Keeps detailed paperwork both manually and electronically concerning repairs and maintenance.
- Makes recommendations, based on expertise, concerning repair or replacement of equipment and vehicles.
- Responds to requests for repairs, scheduled and unscheduled in a timely fashion.
- Does repair work in the field, as well as in the shop during all weather conditions.
- Ensures service truck is well stocked with necessary items to effectively repair trucks and equipment in the field by identifying source of mechanical failure.
- Proficiency in creating, reading, and understanding repair order software.
- Uses independent judgement and makes recommendations, based on expertise, concerning repair or replacement of equipment and vehicles.
- Provides service and customer support during field visits, dispatch calls, or emergencies.
- Advises and guides equipment operators on proper use of equipment.
- Clean, maintain and organize equipment, tools, and the general work area.
- Lube Technician competency amongst all Track equipment categories.
- Experience and competency to complete Annual DOT inspection amongst all on-road Track equipment (minimum 1-year experience).
- Ability to diagnose standard mechanical and electrical problems as well as damage and safety defects.
- Brakes and chassis work.
- Air Conditioning o Cooling Systems.
