What are the responsibilities and job description for the Hyperspectral Application Scientist position at Surface Optics Corporation?
Summary: The Hyperspectral Application Scientist will serve as the technical expert for hyperspectral product development, marketing, and sales. They will help develop and support our distributor network, with opportunities for international travel. They will also support sales staff and work with engineering and manufacturing teams to create new products. The position is full time, located in the company?s San Diego headquarters.
This employee is the hyperspectral expert and a critical member of the marketing and sales teams. The employee will work to understand customers? needs and technical requirements, provide pre- and post-sales support, and communicate directly with end-users and distributors. Some travel is required to visit customers and distributors, and attend, exhibit, and present at conferences. This employee may also author marketing materials such as white papers, application notes, webinars, and social media posts.
Additionally, this employee will be a member of the product development team. They will investigate competing technologies and products, suggest new hyperspectral products, and support product development. They may also co-author SBIR proposals to develop new technologies and products.

- Develop a strong technical proficiency on all Surface Optics Corporation product lines. Understand product uses, customer needs, competition, and Surface Optics advantages and weaknesses
- Deliver technical presentations and product demonstrations to potential customers
- Direct interface with end-users and distributors with product questions (phone & site travel)
- Periodic travel in the field in support of key business opportunities, promotion opportunities, trade shows and conferences, technical committee meetings
- Create inbound marketing materials such as white papers, technical articles, and blog posts to communicate with target customer audiences
- Establish yourself as a thought leader in the photonics industry by authoring articles for industry news sites, serving on technical committees and engaging customers and partners on social media
- Develop compelling, high-quality technical papers for publication in scientific journals and present technical findings at industry conferences
- Perform competitive analysis of competing products and technologies to help craft messaging for sales team and contribute to product development strategy
- Train new sales representatives and distributors on Surface Optics products
- Qualify new markets for existing products
- Author SBIR proposals in coordination with existing technical staff
- Mandatory attendance at all-hands SOC safety, security and HR meetings
Travel Requirements:
Position may require travel both internationally and domestically up to 20% of the time
