The Director of Surgical Services is a key leadership role within the surgical services department, responsible for overseeing all operational, administrative, and clinical functions related to the operating rooms (OR) at both locations. The director will work closely with the OR Coordinators, surgeons, anesthesiologists, nursing staff, and other medical personnel to ensure high-quality patient care, operational efficiency, and safety in the operating rooms. This position requires a strategic leader who can effectively manage resources, budgets, and staff while maintaining compliance with health regulations and organizational policies.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership & Management:
  • Lead and manage all aspects of operating room services, including the daily operations, staffing, and scheduling of procedures.
  • Supervise and support OR nursing staff, surgical technologists, and ancillary staff, providing coaching and mentoring to promote a high-performing team.
  • Collaborate with department heads, surgeons, and other stakeholders to plan and execute strategic initiatives that improve OR performance and patient care outcomes.
  • Ensure effective communication between departments, ensuring a cohesive approach to patient care and operational success.
  • Quality & Compliance:
  • Develop, implement, and monitor policies and procedures for safe and efficient OR operations in compliance with healthcare regulations, accreditation standards (e.g., Joint Commission), and best practice guidelines.
  • Establish and monitor quality assurance programs to assess and improve surgical outcomes, patient safety, and staff performance.
  • Lead initiatives to reduce patient wait times, prevent surgical delays, and enhance the overall patient experience in the OR.
  • Operational Efficiency:
  • Oversee scheduling of surgeries and coordinate the necessary resources (personnel, equipment, and supplies) for timely and effective procedures.
  • Manage the operating room budget, ensuring cost-effective resource allocation and identifying opportunities to reduce waste while maintaining high standards of care.
  • Evaluate and optimize the use of technology, equipment, and instruments to ensure effective and efficient OR operations.
  • Monitor OR turnover times and implement improvements to maximize room utilization and minimize delays.
  • Staff Development:
  • Recruit, train, and retain highly skilled OR staff, ensuring appropriate staffing levels are maintained at all times.
  • Promote a culture of continuous learning and professional development for all OR staff through regular training sessions, certifications, and educational opportunities.
  • Conduct performance evaluations for OR staff, providing constructive feedback, setting performance goals, and identifying areas for improvement.
  • Patient Care & Safety:
  • Ensure adherence to patient safety protocols and infection control standards, including preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative care.
  • Act as an advocate for patients, ensuring that patient care is coordinated, compassionate, and aligned with the highest standards of medical practice.
  • Address and resolve any patient or family concerns regarding surgical services or the OR experience.
  • Collaboration & Communication:
  • Foster strong, collaborative relationships with surgeons, anesthesiologists, nursing teams, and other medical professionals to ensure smooth OR operations and positive patient outcomes.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary meetings to contribute to strategic planning and decision-making for the surgical services department.
  • Serve as a liaison between hospital administration and the OR team, ensuring effective communication and implementation of organizational goals.

Required Experience:
  • Education:
    • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, or a related field (required).
    • Master’s degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, or a related field (preferred).
  • Licensure/Certifications:
    • Registered Nurse (RN) license (required).
    • Certification in perioperative nursing (e.g., CNOR) (preferred).
    • Advanced certifications in leadership or management (e.g., FACHE, Lean Six Sigma) are a plus.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 5-7 years of progressive leadership experience in a healthcare setting, including at least 3 years in a perioperative environment.
