BASIC JOB PURPOSE:
Responsible for assisting and overseeing the requirements and daily duties of the Sterile Processing Department following the policies and procedures of Surgicare of Lake Charles, AAMI and State of Louisiana Ambulatory Surgery Center (LASC and ASC) guidelines. Also responsible for preparing and assembling medical and surgical supplies, instrumentation, and equipment, maintaining the sterile processing areas, and receiving and distributing new surgical instruments and equipment.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Licensure/Certifications
Required:
- High school graduate or equivalent
- Central Supply Processing Department Technician (CSPDT)
Preferred:
- One year of sterile processing experience
- Certified Instrument Specialist (CIS) certification
- Computer skills (eg, Microsoft® PowerPoint, Word, Excel)
REPORTS TO:
- Director of Nursing or Charge Nurse in the absense of the DON
- Administrator
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, and hear. The employee is frequently required to move upper extremities within full range of motion as well as stoop and bend at 90 degrees. The employee must occasionally lift, push, pull and/or move up to 100 pounds with assistance.

STANDARDS OF CARE:
Assists and oversees the requirements and daily duties of the Sterile Processing Department following the policies and procedures of Surgicare of Lake Charles, AAMI and State of Louisiana Ambulatory Surgery Center guidelines.
CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION:
____A. Ensures availability of adequate supplies and instruments for posted cases
____B. Operates all required equipment and machinery accurately and safely, prepares, assembles, and sterilizes instruments and supplies according to parameters of sterilization in accordance with The Department of Health, OSHA, CDC, AAMI and AORN standards.
____C. Maintains appropriate records for quality and infection control standards.
____D. Provides asset management and support of surgical instruments, trays , and equipment belonging to or consigned to the facility
____E. Accurately handles and cares for instruments appropriately, including appropriate selection of cleaning agents, lubricants, examination for function, identification and assembly according to OneSource and preparation for sterilization; retrieves malfunctioning instruments and ensures repairs are completed.
____F. Correctly peel-packs supplies/instruments, wraps instruments for sterilization, inspect each instrument for use, function, completeness and cleanliness.
____G. Coordinates with Materials Manager to ensure facility sets are stocked to PAR levels. * Ensures safe care to patients, staff and visitors; adheres to all Surgicare policies, procedures and standards and quality of service.
____H. Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization;
____I. Communicate with operating room staff to provide required instruments.
____J. Is responsible for reporting damaged or malfunctioning equipment to Clinical Director and Material Manger and follow process for replacement.
____K. Resources to nursing staff in all departments regarding responsibilities of proper sterilization techniques.
____L. Clean, set up, sterilize and distribute instruments as scheduled on each shift.
____M. Maintains records for QA and sterilization.
____N. Employees are expected to comply with all regulatory requirements, including State of Louisiana Ambulatory Surgery Center Guidelines.
____O. Is familiar with organization, department and job specific Environment of Care areas, including Life Safety, Hazardous Materials Communications, Emergency Preparedness, Infection Control and Medical Equipment Failure.
____P. Adheres to Standard Precautions as appropriate, which may include: the use of protective barriers, as appropriate (e.g., gloves, masks, gowns, pocket masks, and/or safety glasses); handling and disposing of infectious waste appropriately; and hand washing as appropriate

Assists in the overall maintenance of the sterile processing department including other duties to assist in preparing for upcoming surgeries.

____D. Evaluates suggestions objectively, accepts constructive criticism, and seeks guidance as needed.

CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION:
____A. Minimum amount of heavy lifting for this position. Must lift instrument trays, move equipment, and assist with the transfer of patients from one location to another.
____B. Uses good posture and body mechanics when lifting or putting physical stress on the body.
