What are the responsibilities and job description for the Social Worker II - Child Protective Services Intake Agent position at Surry County DSS?
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: This position is responsible for completing child welfare intake, with occasional coverage for adult protective services. The individual must be able to synthesize information into clear and concise format. Reports are received from callers, walk-ins, faxes, and mailed documents, The position is primarily in the office but occasional assignments to interview children and adults in the community, as well as facilitate Child and Family Team meetings. This individual must be familiar with NC State Guidelines for Child Welfare Services and have the ability to interpret law and policy as it pertains to CPS and APS intake.
The primary function of this position is to complete CPS intake reports and conduct a first level screening decision based on state guidelines. Additionally, this person must be familiar with community resources and how to connect and direct clients to those services. The selected candidate must understand and utilize correctly all Federal, State, and local law, policies, and procedures relevant to child abuse, neglect, and dependency. This person must be able to communicate effectively with individuals from a wide range of social and economic backgrounds, as well as possess the ability to de-escalate situations that could become disruptive by maintaining a calm demeanor.
Additional duties include conducting child welfare eligibility, criminal background checks, maintenance of child welfare records and logs, and working as part of the Child Welfare Team to support the unit in meeting statutory mandates and requirements. Valid NC Driver’s License and vehicle in good operating condition required.
SPECIAL ATTRIBUTES AND SKILLS: Requires good interviewing skills. Proficiency in computer use and keyboarding is essential.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited school of social work; or four year degree in a human services field or related curriculum including at least fifteen semester hours in courses related to social work or counseling and one year of social work or counseling experience; or graduation from a four year college or university, and two years of experience in rehabilitation counseling, pastoral counseling, or a related human services field providing experience in the techniques of casework, group work, or community organization; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
