The Surry County Sheriff’s Office is accepting applications for a full time Animal Control Officer / Deputy position.

GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:

We are looking for someone who enjoys interacting with animals and the public. One who is positive, a team player with a high level of integrity, demonstrated sound judgment, and a strong work ethic. Surry County Sheriff's Office is seeking a self-motivated Animal Control Officer / Deputy to enforce all state and local laws involving animal control and animal welfare.

This full time position will provide animal control services to include receiving and processing animal complaints, investigating animal bites, addressing animal welfare and the enforcement of state and local code while promoting public health and safety. Responsibilities will include maintaining sound relationships with the public, and being an advocate for the welfare of animals.
Essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Patrols the County to preserve law and order, to identify and solve problems, to prevent and discover the commission of crimes, to serve the public and to direct traffic and enforce the motor vehicle law;
  • Patrols the County for stray, unlicensed or injured animals and enforces state and County animal laws;
  • Responds to and investigates animal related complaints and claims of suspected rabies and animal bites and orders and oversees animal quarantine;
  • Interviews/interrogates suspects, gathers information and prepares detailed reports;
  • Takes in abandoned, stray, unvaccinated and unlicensed animals, checks animal licenses, transports stray animals for impoundment, transports animals to the vet and administers medications;
  • Maintains and secure evidence and other property; Attends regular in-service training classes to maintain state certification;
  • Issues warnings and summons for ordinance related violations and prepares and presents information in court;
  • Prepares and maintains files, records and reports, rabies related records and data and lost and found records;
  • Sets and monitors animal traps, captures animals, euthanizes animals and disposes of carcasses;
  • Operates animal shelter, maintains facilities, grounds and equipment, cleans shelter and vehicles, cleans and disinfects kennels and cages to provide a suitable environment for the animals and makes inspections of all animals and cages for the health, welfare, safety and cleanliness of animals and cages;
  • Coordinates daily work activities with other departments, health department officials, veterinarians, outside agencies, or others as needed; organizes, prioritizes, and assigns work; monitors and inspects work; assists with complex/problem situations, and provides technical expertise;
  • Attend all meetings required by the Sheriff's Office and stay educated on changing laws, and regulations;
  • Be a positive representative of the Sheriff's Office;
  • Educates citizens about animal welfare; and
  • Other duties as assigned by the Sheriff or a supervisor .

QUALIFICATIONS

Entry-level knowledge of police methods, practices and procedures, or the ability to acquire this knowledge and apply it; general knowledge of the geography of the County and the location of important landmarks and buildings or the ability to acquire this knowledge rapidly; ability to deal courteously but firmly with the general public; demonstrated ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions, and to prepare clear and comprehensive reports; must be able to act without immediate supervision and exercise independent judgment in meeting emergencies; physical ability to perform job tasks; and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and the general public. Must be a high school graduate or possess GED.

PHYSICAL CONDITIONS AND NATURE OF WORK CONTACTS

Typically performs duties on foot, from a motor vehicle; desk duties include writing reports, accessing computer information from computer terminals; frequent and extensive walking, standing and occasional running is necessary; heavy lifting and pushing is required; periods of sitting may be necessary; ability to physically subdue and restrain animals an individuals is required; this position requires performance of duties in adverse weather, day and night; regular exposure to life-threatening and emotionally stressful situations is required; regular contact is made with the general public; frequent contact with community and school groups to inform and educate on animal welfare; occasional contact with government officials including Judges, and lawyers is necessary to serve as a witness or in conjunction with arrests and citations. Contacts may require considerable tact, diplomacy and discretion.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Minimum age of 21 years, Must be a citizen of the United States and live in the Commonwealth of Virginia, Must possess and maintain throughout employment with the Surry County Sheriff's Office a Virginia Operator’s License without any restrictions affecting job performance and in good standing, All candidates must have good moral character as determined by a background investigation, and must successfully complete mandated Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services training and certifications as it relates to animal control and deputy sheriff.
