The Sutter County Probation Department is currently seeking a Probation Aide to join their team.
Under supervision, a Probation Aide assists Probation Officer staff in non-peace officer, technical duties associated with the monitoring of adult probation, mandatory supervision and post-release community supervision cases, and juvenile probation cases; performs related duties as assigned
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other related duties may be required and assigned.
- Monitor supervision cases, log calls and monthly reports.
- Prepare and send failure to comply notices, monitor fine and other payments.
- Alert Probation Officers if a violation of probation is apparent and prepare necessary paperwork for a violation of probation.
- Interview defendants in and out of custody.
- Submit written reports to the court, type lists, letters, memos, and forms as required.
- Communicate with allied agencies on common cases, subject to established policies and procedures.
- Maintain records and files, perform criminal history background checks.
- Make referrals to various applicable programs.
- Verify school and counseling attendance, monitor parental compliance with juvenile court orders and monitor juveniles in placement.
- Provide Probation Officers with case history information for official court reports.
- Explain conditions of probation to probationers and assure that terms and conditions of probation are complied with.
- Process and transport clients.
- Perform drug testing on clients according to established procedures and guidelines.
- May be required to provide a non-peace officer support such as drug testing and assisting with searches for various special enforcement activities, including assignments with the local drug enforcement task force, joint operations with local law enforcement, and other special assignments.
- Maintain a variety of records and case files; prepares reports, statements, legal documents, correspondence, and other written material, and testifies in court.
- Provide victim services, including referrals and courtroom support to victims of crime.
- Provide services to persons through alternate sanction programs. Participate and / or coordinate activities related to special programs. Work as part of teams, or independently in the schools, or in prevention / intervention programs.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of : Basic principles of applied psychology and sociology; interviewing techniques; human behavior and dynamics.
Ability to : Learn the principles and practices of current adult and juvenile probation work; learn state laws and county ordinances affecting adults and juvenile probation; learn current casework techniques applicable to probation work; understand and deal effectively with offenders on or applying for probation, mandatory supervision and postrelease community supervision; work effectively with a multi-cultural population; analyze investigative material; make proper deductions and recommendations; determine truth of statements; work cooperatively with peace officers and related social service agencies; learn to perform drug testing and urine collection procedures; learn to input data, access and analyze data using computer; establish and maintain effective working relationships with county departments, other agencies, employees and the general public; speak and write effectively.
Education and Experience : Any combination of education, training, and / or experience which would provide the equivalent knowledge and abilities. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be : Completion of academic coursework in sociology, psychology, counseling, social work, criminology, administration of justice or related field or one-year experience working in a law enforcement, public safety, or social services agency.

Requires the ability to maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of exercising sound judgment and rational thinking under varied circumstances; ability to think and act quickly in emergencies; effectively deal with personal danger; maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include providing non-peace officer support in enforcement activities, subduing resisting individuals, chasing fleeing subjects, running, crouching or crawling during emergency operations; requires sufficient hand / eye coordination to perform semi-skilled repetitive movements, such as using a computer, typing, or use of other office equipment or supplies; maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observation and communicating orally with others; ability to operate assigned equipment and vehicles.
License or Certificate : May require the possession and maintenance of a Valid California Driver's License.
