What are the responsibilities and job description for the CORRECTIONAL FOOD SERVICES SUPERVISOR position at Sutter County Human Resources?
The Sheriff's Department is seeking a Correctional Food Services Supervisor to join their team. Under direction of the correctional facility Division Commander, this position supervises staff and the preparation of correctional facility meals.
- Directs and supervises the county's correctional facility food service program for county inmates.
- Supervises, directs and evaluates assigned staff, to include assigning work, handling employee concerns and problems, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals.
- Supervises a crew of trustees in the preparation and serving of meals, sanitation, and associated tasks.
- Interviews and selects inmates to work in kitchen.
- Provides training and guidance to assigned staff and inmates.
- Ensures that the food service program meets appropriate nutrition and sanitation requirements.
- Plans menus for the facility; plans menus for inmates with special dietary requirements for medical or religious reasons.
- Maintains inventory of departmental food, dry goods and supplies; initiates orders for new or replacement supplies.
- Procures food from government programs; purchases bulk and specialty food within department parameters.
- Receives deliveries from vendors.
- Supervises and participates in preparation of meals.
- Provides cooking instructions to subordinate staff.
- Operates various machinery and equipment associated with food preparation and food service.
- Assists in maintaining kitchen and dining room sanitation and safety.
- Supervises and performs cleaning and maintenance of kitchen equipment, kitchen utensils, dining room, and food preparation areas.
- Applies security measures in kitchen and during serving periods.
- Assists in preparing the food service program budget.
- Prepares reports on food inventory, spoilage and cleaning supplies.
- Prepares and/or generates various forms and documentation.
- Reviews various documentation and processes, forwards, or takes other action as appropriate.
- Maintains departmental records.
- Answers the telephone, provides information, takes messages and/or directs calls as appropriate.
- Responds to requests for information or assistance.
Ability to: Supervise and direct an institutional food service program; supervise, direct and evaluate subordinates; supervise a kitchen facility utilizing inmate workers; prepare menus; procure and store food supplies within established procedures; prepare large quantities of food; establish and maintain effective working relationships with prisoners, jail staff, and other department staff or members of the public who interact with the food service program; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; maintain record keeping systems; operate various machinery, equipment and tools associated with food preparation, food service, and kitchen sanitation.
Education and Experience: Three years of institutional cooking experience and/or education that could demonstrate possession of the above knowledge and abilities, or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.Essential Duties require the following physical skills and work requirements:
Requires the ability to exert a moderate amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects and to stoop, crouch, and lift; operate a variety of kitchen tools and equipment used in performance of daily tasks; may be subject to uncomfortable working conditions including exposure to noise, heat, cold or humidity; perceive color, odor, texture, & taste.

Must pass a background check by the Sheriff's Department.
