The Health and Human Services Department is seeking a Punjabi speaking Vocational Assistant to join their team in the Employment & Eligibility branch.

Recruitment Schedule:

Hiring Interview - April 7 thru April 11, 2025

Under general supervision, performs a variety of nontechnical, subprofessional work functions in such areas as staff services, social services, eligibility determination, and/or child care

This is a bilingual position and requires fluency in Punjabi.  A listening/speaking/reading/writing comprehension exam may be required in the evaluation process.  Bilingual Pay is an additional compensation.

The current vacancy is in the Employment & Eligibility branch of Health and Human Services.  The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill any future vacancies in the next 6 months.

This position acts as receptionist; assists the public in person or by telephone; answers/screens telephone calls and takes messages; provides information/assistance to the public; explains and assists the public in particular departmental policies/procedures. It is responsible for the issuance and distribution of Electronic Benefit Cards (EBT). Some duties include: Maintains, updates and accesses a variety of manual and computerized records and files; prepares, enters, logs, and/or tallies and files information; verifies accuracy of information and corrects when necessary; Receives, opens, sorts, image and distributes incoming/outgoing mail and other materials according to readily identifiable department codes our instructions; Operates a variety of office machines and equipment such as personal computer or mainframe computer terminal, adding machine or calculator, EBT machine, photocopier, stamp machine, labeling machine, fax, etc.; copies, sorts and collates a variety of materials as assigned; Maintains inventory of departmental supplies and initiates requests for new or additional materials; Facilitates effective communication between applicants, clients, and agency staff; assists in establishing and maintaining working relationships between agency, clients and the community service; assists in the referral of clients to appropriate community resources; Participates in required trainings; and Assist customers with completing application forms and processes; assist with translations as needed. 


Knowledge of:  A basic understanding of the needs, problems, attitudes and behavior of clients served by the agency in the local community; basic principles of child development; available departmental and community resources; basic procedures and services of the program in which employed; basic mathematics; standard office equipment; and clerical activities related to an organization's programs and operations.
 
Ability to:  Accept and benefit from training; reason logically; utilize and apply effectively required knowledge; analyze situations and take effective action; understand and accept differences in human behavior resulting from cultural, financial or other forms of deprivation; take initiative with client interaction and in maintaining the work environment; read, write, speak and understand English; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective interpersonal relations with clients and residents of the local community; follow written and oral instructions; prepare clear and accurate reports; maintain accurate and systematic records; make simple arithmetic computations; operate standard office equipment; and operate equipment typically utilized in a day care environment.
 
Education and Experience:  Six months of paid or unpaid work experience in a human services agency which has provided an understanding and acceptance of clients served by the agency; or any combination of education or experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.Essential Duties require the following physical skills and work requirements: 
Requires the ability to exert a small amount of physical effort in sedentary to light work involving moving from one area of the office to another. May require the possession and maintenance of a valid California Driver's license.
