JOB SUMMARY
The General Services Department is seeking candidates for an Accounting Technician I position.
Under direction, performs advanced technical accounting, bookkeeping, and clerical work in the preparation, maintenance, and processing of accounting records and financial transactions and performs other work as required. Under direction, may also process legal documents and permits. Duties require the ability to work independently.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other related duties may be required and assigned.
- Performs advanced bookkeeping and clerical work in maintaining fiscal records and other reports, including preparing and posting journal and ledger entries. One or more of the following general disciplines may be involved: accounts payable, accounts receivable, fixed assets, general ledger, and/or payroll.
- Receives, processes and disburses revenues.
- Prepares bank deposits and reconciles bank statements.
- Maintains complex accounts and ledgers.
- Maintains departmental files and records.
- Responds to requests for information or assistance and coordinates accounting activities with other County departments.
- Establishes new accounts and funds as needed.
- Assists in the preparation, including statistical typing, of budgets, financial statements, schedules, and other statistical and financial reports.
- Identifies and resolves problems and inconsistencies, determines corrective entries to maintain accounting controls.
- Audits reports and statements to assure accuracy and completion.
- Prepares reports allocating overhead and support service costs among programs.
- May conduct sales of real and personal property.
- May research civil codes and process legal documents and permits.
- Performs routine duties of higher level accountants and other related work as needed.
- Answers telephone, takes messages and/or directs calls as appropriate.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of: Principles and practices of advanced financial record keeping/bookkeeping; computerized data processing principles; basic accounting principles; modern office procedures and equipment; and basic mathematics. May require knowledge of civil procedures and court filing policies.
Ability to: Understand and interpret principles, laws and procedures involved in fiscal record keeping and accounting; learn laws, codes and statutes associated with assigned work and apply them appropriately; maintain accurate ledgers and journals; analyze data and draw sound conclusions; reconcile bank statements; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; work independently; communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Education and Experience: Three years of experience in the accounting/bookkeeping field, or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities. College course work in accounting or bookkeeping is desirable.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Essential Duties require the following physical skills and work requirements:
Requires the ability to exert a small amount of physical effort in sedentary to light work involving moving from one area of the office to another; some positions require sufficient hand/eye coordination to perform semi-skilled repetitive movements, such as data entry, and/or use of calculators, ten-key adding machine, or other office equipment or supplies.
