EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other related duties may be required and assigned.
- Operate and maintain wastewater collection, treatment, and disposal facilities.
- Perform assigned rounds inspecting, monitoring and documenting plant and system operations by reading equipment gauges, dials, graphs and other instrumentation.
- Operate and adjust pumps, motors, feeders, and other specialized equipment to maintain appropriate plant and system operations.
- Maintain, compile and update operations logs and reports; perform and record mathematical calculations related to operational activities.
- Assignments may include technical and/or functional supervision regarding wastewater system operations to other positions as appropriate.
- Collect product and waste stream samples and perform a variety of routine wastewater process laboratory tests; record, monitor, and interpret results; adjust plant operations accordingly.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation of plant activities; compile data, and prepare reports.
- Collecting samples for, preparing, and signing/certifying monthly and quarterly reports for applicable State Departments/Agencies.
- Inspection of tanks, pumps, equipment and connections into County wastewater systems.
- Perform basic maintenance on pumps, electrical and plumbing repair.
- Confer with contractors for bids on supplies, maintenance and repairs.
- Meet and respond to the public regarding wastewater issues.
- Performs and interprets laboratory testing of and wastewater.
- Provides training and technical supervision over staff performing as backup operators.
- Gathers and analyzes flood zone information, and right-of-way information.
- Performs land surveying duties.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of: Principles, practices, methods, materials, and equipment used in operating and maintaining wastewater treatment plants; hydraulic and electrical controls and supervisory sensory controls used in the operation of wastewater treatment; basic chemistry in the field of wastewater treatment; math sufficient to perform calculations for waterworks operations; principals of supervision and training; occupational hazards and safety precautions connected with working with mechanical and electrical equipment; basic construction, electrical, and mechanical principles, methods, and practices of maintaining machinery and equipment in good condition; safe work practices.
Ability to: Observe plant operations and take appropriate action; anticipate problems and flow variations based upon seasonal, weather, and periodic variables and take appropriate action to assure continued compliance with State and Federal regulations; complete work with minimal supervision; respond to difficult and sensitive public inquiries; maintain accurate records and prepare clear and concise reports; operate independently and act in various types of situations and emergencies relating to the wastewater systems; read engineering drawings; operate equipment necessary to perform duties; oversee and direct the work of others; understand and follow oral and written instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others contacted during the course of work.
Education and Experience: Training and experience equivalent to two years of experience in the maintenance and operation of wastewater systems; some technical engineering experience or education is desirable; or any combination of education and experience that provides the equivalent knowledge and abilities.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Essential Duties require the following physical skills and work requirements:
Requires the ability to maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of exercising sound judgment and rational thinking under varied circumstances; requires the ability to perform on-site field inspections including exertion of a moderate amount of physical effort to stoop, crouch, climb and lift in performance of assigned duties; requires walking, standing, sitting and climbing for extended long periods of time; ability to work around construction materials in a safe manner; ability to hear and communicate orally; ability to think and act quickly in emergencies; may be subject to uncomfortable working conditions including exposure to dust, noise, heat or cold; must be able to perceive color, shapes, and forms; requires sufficient hand/eye coordination to perform semi-skilled repetitive movements, such as drawing, data entry and operating a variety of automated office machinery and survey equipment which includes computer, printer, fax machine, telephone, photocopier, calculator, rulers, levels, hammers, and stakes; work in an environment with exposure to harsh or harmful chemicals, cleansing agents and other skin irritants, and other potentially hazardous substances; requires the ability to operate a motor vehicle.
License or Certificate: Must possess and maintain a valid Grade II Certificate as a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator issued by the State of California Water Resources Control Board. Must possess and maintain an appropriate, valid driver's license.
