Purpose of the Position:
The Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate and detailed cost estimates for electrical projects, including commercial, industrial, and oil & gas installations. This role involves reviewing project plans and specifications, calculating material and labor costs, obtaining quotes from suppliers, and preparing bid proposals for clients. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of electrical systems, cost estimation practices, and project management.
Typical Duties:
The following duties are typical of the position but are not all encompassing. Each person is expected to assist in any duties that may be required to deliver a high-quality product for the customer.
1.Cost Estimation: Analyze project drawings, specifications, and other documentation to prepare accurate cost estimates for electrical installations. Include labor, material, and overhead costs.
2.Bid Preparation: Develop and submit detailed proposals and bids to clients, ensuring that all relevant factors, such as scope, timeframes, and project requirements, are covered.
3.Material & Equipment Sourcing: Identify and procure necessary materials and equipment for the project, obtaining competitive pricing from suppliers and subcontractors.
4.Budgeting & Cost Control: Collaborate with project managers to develop project budgets. Monitor project costs and production reports in order to adjust estimates as needed to ensure profitability while maintaining quality standards.
5.Site Visits & Assessments: Conduct site visits when necessary to assess the scope of work, review existing conditions, and refine cost estimates.
6.Collaboration: Work closely with project managers, engineers, and field staff to ensure accurate estimates and provide assistance in resolving discrepancies or changes during project execution.
7.Project Tracking: Maintain a database of historical project costs and installation units to inform future estimates and improve accuracy. Track ongoing projects to ensure that costs are aligning with initial estimates.
8.Risk Analysis: Identify potential risks, scope changes, or unforeseen complications that could affect project costs or timelines and incorporate these into estimates.
9.Client Communication: Communicate with clients to clarify specifications, answer questions, and provide additional information regarding estimates and bids.
Limits of Authority:
Has authority to work with vendors and customers to discuss scopes of work and pricing to ensure that project is quoted in the most competitive manner. Has the authority to make changes to the estimating software for company continuous improvement. Does not have the complete authority to decide on what jobs are bid, this would be coordinated with each divisional Project Director.
Relationship to Others:
Reports to the Manager of Sales & Estimating (Currently the Executive Vice President). Must maintain a positive relationship with all customers. The Estimator must be able to relate to clients and vendors in a thoughtful, professional, and pleasant manner. The Estimator must promote interdepartmental communication and cooperation.
Accountability:
The estimator will be the head company representative interacting with the customers and vendors during the estimating phase of a project. Must take the responsibility that comes along with that by embracing the Swan Core Values and Brand Promise.
Knowledge and Experience Required:
1.High school diploma or equivalent (required). A degree in construction management, electrical engineering or field installation experience is preferred.
2.Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in electrical estimating, with a solid understanding of electrical systems, blueprints, and construction methods.
3.Any relevant industry certifications (such as estimating software certifications or electrical licensure) are a plus.
4.Strong knowledge of electrical codes, standards, and estimating software (e.g., Accubid, Bluebeam, etc.).
5.Ability to read and interpret electrical blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings.
6.Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
7.Strong attention to detail with the ability to identify discrepancies in project specifications and plans.
8.Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel, and estimating software.
9.Strong time management skills and the ability to handle multiple estimates and projects simultaneously.
10.Ability to lift and carry equipment up to 25 lbs.
11.Ability to perform site visits, which may require walking or standing for extended periods.
