Position Title :            Corporate Accountant Reports to :                 Corporate Controller Department :             Administration Hours per shift :         9-hour shift, with two 10-minute breaks and a 1-hour lunch, overtime may include some nights, weekends, or holidays, as Business needs dictate Wage :                          Dependent on experience Position Purpose :      The Corporate Accountant will play an important role in supporting the controllers in the overall accounting and administrative process at Swanson Group’s corporate office and plant site offices.  Responsibilities include maintaining general ledger, preparing entries for month end close, overseeing the company’s assets, working with external auditors and coordination of financial statement preparation.

The person in this position is expected to have an accounting degree or equivalent work experience.

The Corporate Accountant is expected to identify and communicate significant issues that fall within his / her sphere of influence such as financial results, company policies, efforts or work quality of accounting department (includes direct reports, peers, analysts, controllers, accountants, etc.), personnel issues, workload allocation, etc. Essential Functions

  • These duties are designated as ADA Essential Functions and must be performed in this job. Leadership The Corporate Accountant will set a positive example for all employees that are in direct contact.

Responsible for positively contributing to the overall tone and direction of the corporate office as well as any assigned location office(s) and ensuring that good morale and working conditions are achieved.  Must be able to independently make suggestions and / or recommend changes that will improve the efficiency, morale or working conditions for the corporate office as well as any assigned location office(s).

The Corporate Accountant is expected to always portray the Company in a positive manner.  Policies Enforcement The Corporate Accountant will work in cooperation with the Corporate Controller and V.P.

of Finance / CFO in developing and maintaining policies that ensure the accuracy of accounting information and consistency in application of those policies across all divisions.  Additionally, the Corporate Accountant is responsible for maintaining and enforcing all other Company policies as outlined in the Swanson Group, Inc.

Salaried Employees Handbook. Facilitation Identify issues that may require the attention of the Corporate Controller and / or V.P.

Finance and communicate them in a timely manner.  Communicate any significant perceptions, whether in operations or within the office, with the Corporate Controller and / or V.P.

Finance or other appropriate Swanson Group manager. Staffing The Corporate Accountant will assist the Corporate Controller in supporting the staffing needs of the corporate office as well as any assigned location office(s) and aid in maintaining a proper level of staffing whereby each person is challenged to complete their job in the allotted time but is not unreasonably overburdened with work relative to the other employees.   • Financial Statements – The Corporate Accountant is responsible for assisting in the timely preparation of the monthly financial statements for all manufacturing locations in accordance with the corporate closing schedule provided by the Corporate Controller.
  • General Ledger – The Corporate Accountant is expected to support the Controllers in maintaining a complete, current and accurate general ledger for the assigned location(s) always.  The Corporate Accountant will ensure appropriate and accurate general ledger account coding and expense distribution and must perform timely reconciliations of all general ledger accounts and be able to provide the Corporate Controller and / or V.P.
  • Finance a complete closing notebook within 5 business days of the last day of the financial statement close.

  • Intercompany Accounts – The Corporate Accountant will work in cooperation with the Corporate Controller and the other controllers to ensure accurate and balanced intercompany accounting and billing.
  • This will also include allocations between corporate overhead and other divisions.

  • Fixed Assets / Depreciation – The Corporate Accountant is expected to maintain an accurate and detailed record of property, plant and equipment for all locations.  Depreciation should be maintained monthly, and an accurate monthly report on additions / deletions should be included with your financial statement package.  A monthly fixed asset roll-forward will also be maintained for year-end audit purposes.
  • The Corporate Accountant will also account and prepare statements for extraordinary repair projects and capital projects. Other Responsibilities

  • Financial Analysis – The Corporate Accountant will be expected to provide financial guidance and support for miscellaneous issues such as operations analysis and timber analysis as requested.  Furthermore, the Corporate Accountant will be expected to have a solid understanding of mill mechanics to be able to make suggestions for improvement in manufacturing cost, recovery, and production.
  • Audit & Tax Support – The Corporate Accountant is responsible for the coordination of the annual financial statement audit for assigned location(s) in cooperation with the Corporate Controller.
  • This includes preparation of year-end audit schedules and direct interface and discussion with auditors as needed.

  • Reporting – The Corporate Accountant must become an expert in manufacturing locations in the use of appropriate reporting tools (currently SSRS, AdHoc and Excel Reports).  At a minimum the Corporate Accountant will be expected to produce and maintain financial statements, production reports, inventory reports and miscellaneous support reports using the reporting program.
  • Other Items – The Corporate Accountant will respond to any intermittent / miscellaneous administrative tasks that he / she is the most qualified person at the corporate office to handle.  Other items as assigned by the Corporate Controller / V.P.
  • Finance. Non-Essential Functions

  • These duties are secondary in nature and are not classified as ADA essential. Cross train to back up other office personnel.
  • Tasks may include credit, cash, AP or other general office tasks. Perform other duties as assigned by Corporate Controller, V.P.

    of Finance / CFO and other company executives.   Working Environment :

  • Inside 99%, average temperature 70 degrees F.
  • Atmospheric conditions : Ventilation, little to no dust or particulate matter exposure. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and / or hear.  The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, and sit. Physical Demands :   See the Physical Capabilities as listed below; this position requires constant use of hearing and vision, bilateral use of arms and hands, frequent bending, twisting, pushing / pulling and reaching, and occasional lifting / carrying / pushing / pulling more than 30 lbs. Education, Skills, Abilities :
  • Satisfactorily perform all areas addressed in the “Essential Functions”
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or business-related concentration is required
  • Experience with MRP / ERP (Infor M3 specifically) system preferred but not required
  • Exceptional excel skills, strong analytical and trouble shooting skills
  • Minimum of 5-years of progressively increasing responsibility in the areas of accounting and supervision with emphasis in the wood products industry
  • Strong 10-key and computer skills particularly around database creation and management
  • Office procedures background and great attention to detail and accuracy
