JOB SUMMARY -
To instruct high-quality exercise class experiences structured for specific levels of fitness and/or specific populations that are effective, safe and fun. Free/fee classes run on a quarterly schedule.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential Functions
* Demonstrates a commitment to the mission of Galter LifeCenter and demonstrates a service orientation and adheres to all responsibilities and standards of the Life Center.
Utilize sound exercise principles to ensure maximum safety of participants.
- Monitor participants’ target heart rates/perceived exertion, progress and exercise form.
- Be aware of and monitor participants’ special needs.
- Recognize symptoms of fatigue and overexertion and take appropriate action.
- Be aware of beginners and lower level exercisers and notify them throughout class of modifications; encourage these participants to work at their own level.
- Follow exercise guidelines provided by a national certification (accreditation) and/or from specialty/licensed certifications for maximum effectiveness.
Perform each class in accordance with a prescribed method: Science of Execution
- Execute exercises with proper technique.
- Execute with authenticity.
- Perform movements rhythmically (to the beat of the music).
- Provide well-rounded exercise class with appropriate warm-up and cool down periods.
- Deliver choreography effectively.
Ensure effective coaching, genuine connecting, and appropriate entertaining are provided to participants.
- Motivate and coach by being caring, supportive, encouraging, and inspiring.
- Know what to say and when to say it.
- Make positive and specific corrections of technique throughout class.
- Ensure that participants feel welcome and establish rapport – before, during, and after classes.
- Be appropriately prepared for classes.
- Coach monthly technique plans to classes as provided by Supervisor.
- Ensure that each class delivers an experience that enhances the participants’ perceived success.
Assist Supervisor in reaching group fitness program goals and objectives.
- Assist Supervisor in establishing new schedules and new classes based on response/feedback from class participants.
- Help provide communication to members on upcoming events including incentive programs, classes, events, and facility issues.
- Assist in implementing, facilitating, and monitoring special programs.
- Record accurate attendance for all classes.
- Teach 1-1 classes or lessons when applicable.
- Ensure accurate enrollment and attendance monitoring of fee-based programs.
- Assist with member evaluations of programs/classes.
- Perform pre and post measures when applicable for specific courses.
Follow all policies and procedures set forth for the group exercise program – see group fitness training manual for further details.
- Start and end classes on time.
- Sub classes for coworkers when available. Follow subbing policies as stated in the manual.
- Ensure that all equipment is used correctly and stored properly at the end of class.
- Report/Document unsafe equipment.
- Use safe decibel levels for music and microphone and utilize appropriate music for classes.
Other Responsibilities:
- Maintain credentials through continuing education in the fitness field.
- Instruct classes on and off-site for SH employees and the community.
- Attend quarterly staff meetings as well as other scheduled employee training.
- Attain a working knowledge of LifeCenter programs.
QUALIFICATIONS/BASIC JOB REQUIREMENTS
- Group Fitness Instructor: B.S. degree in exercise physiology or health related field, preferred ACE Certification, AFAA Certification or other national certification is required.
- 1 or more years of group leading experience preferably in more than one format. Specialty certifications recommended.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, good rhythm and sense of music cueing, general knowledge of exercise and exercise contraindication
- In training Instructor: Newly obtained certification or In process of obtaining certification.

- Mind/Body Instructor: B.S. degree preferred in related field, and/or certification/completion of training from a recognized organization..
