Sweeney Controls Company is seeking a Control System Specialist. This position is responsible for programming and implementing PLC and HMI based control systems. The Control System Specialist will design and develop programs for PLCs, HMIs, and reports; and will work with process concepts, industrial communication networks, and schematics. Travel within ND, SD, MN, and IA, with some overnight stays, is required.
The position requires the ability to quickly understand the system’s function, as well as a great deal of flexibility to work with a variety of applications in a variety of industries.
The Control System Specialist will work with Systems Architect to program systems that will meet the functional requirements. They will also work with Control System Technicians during project startups.
The job:
The Control System Specialist plays a key role in servicing the needs of our clients by carrying out the following core duties:
- Meet our customers’ needs, and exceed their expectations, by enhancing our clients’ understanding of how their system operates, through well-structured HMIs that they can easily navigate, and that our Control System Technicians can easily educate the client on
o Determine whether to follow established guidelines, or whether customization may be needed, modifying your approach as appropriate
o Work with a variety of applications including Rockwell Automation FactoryTalk View, Inductive Automation Ignition, Aveva Wonderware, and Automation Direct C-more
- Do your Best, Always, and enable others to do the same, by fostering an innate understanding of our clients’ PLCs
o Enable a seamless startup, and allow for swift troubleshooting, by developing clean code that the Control System Technician can use to support the control system
o Design PLC programs using any of the 5 IEC standard languages, including ladder diagram, function block diagram, structured text, instruction list, and sequential function chart, to automate control system processes using Rockwell Automation, Schneider Electric, and IDEC PLCs
- Be a Hero to the Sweeney Controls Technical Team by assisting with day-to-day client-focused tasks as the need arises
o Thoroughly test programs through Factory Acceptance Testing
o Provide off-site support for Control System Technicians and existing systems
o Provide on-site system commissioning support as required
- Support our vision to drive innovation and delivery, by recommending improvements to code for client value, consistency, and efficiency
o Optimize HMI for a consistent look, feel, and operation of the control systems
o Seek improvement to PLC and HMI programming processes to be more efficient with fewer errors
- Promote superior customer service and Keep it Clean by fostering effective, proactive communication
o Communicate calmly and clearly regarding progress, potential problems, and solutions to clients, field tradespeople, and on-site engineers, while contributing to the seamless delivery of responsive service by documenting essential details
o Represent Sweeney Controls onsite, via email, and over the phone, cultivating and sustaining client, vendor, and contractor relationship
- Sustain your inquisitive mindset by continuously enhancing your knowledge and skills via memberships in technical and industry-based organizations, reading trade publications, attending seminars, and formal classroom training
What we’re looking for:
- BS degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering or 2 year associate degree in Electrical or Electronic Technology
- Mechanically inclined
- Excellent analytical skills for visualization and problem solving
- Well-organized and detail-oriented
- Competent oral and written communication skills
- Excellent customer service
- Perform effectively despite sudden deadlines and changing priorities
- EIT (FE) certification or a Registered Professional Engineer preferred, but not required
Physical Requirements:
- Sitting for extended periods of time
- Repetitive finger motions for typing and other computer work
- Hearing within normal range for in-person and telephone conversations
- Ability to lift up to 20 pounds
- Visual acuity to view information on a computer monitor
